Thinking of selling my...

... Proteus 2000, but I'm not sure if it's gonne be worth the hassle. Also, whenever I've sold hardware synths before, often I've regretted it later on.

I really like using hardware synths and I currently own a Kurzweil 2500 as well as the Proteus, but I don't gig these days and the Proteus doesn't get much use - when I do get the time for music I generally use VSTs for synth stuff.

I don't really NEED the money (though extra cash always comes in handy) and I don't plan to buy anything else right now, most of the time the P2k just sits there sleeping

So, the questions are:

Should it stay, or should it go..? (da, da, da, da, da, da, da)

And if I were to sell, how much money could I get for a Proteus 2000 in good nick..?

There's also the possibility that nobody will want to buy it even. What do you think?

Or get an E-Mu Xboard 61 that comes with the Proteus software.

A difficult one that. I always had a soft spot for the Proteuses (protei?). They do sound rather unique and rather nice if you make hippy trippy ambient/ world music nose-trombone stuff. On the other hand they can sound awfully dated. And in terms of raw synthesis power, many of the Proteuses weren't exactly titans in the field.

Also must say that I've seen and used some of the SF2s of various Proteuses and they're actually quite useable. And they're for free. So if you throw them into some fully-fledged sampler that can load SF2s or put them into something like Crystal (which is a helluva powerful SF synth, although few seem to use it that way...) then you can get an even better version of a Proteus. And there are so many sample sets on the market that do ethnic stuff now.


If you're not using it much, I'd say get some bucks for it while you can. You can never tell, but I can't see Proteuses ever becoming "classics" that will ever fetch daft prices. They're too reproducible.
