I bought a new mouse so I thought I'd use my old one (a MS wireless explorer mouse) for my laptop but when I tried to install the drivers (MS Intellimouse 5) it said there was a conflict with some software previously installed - I thought at first maybe this was a previous mouse driver so clicked ok and next thing I knew it was about to uninstall my Touchpad Synaptics drivers!! Luckily I cancelled before damage done but now how do I install the mouse? You'd think this sort of thing was like basic - all laptops use Synaptics just about - how come MS screwed up?

Have you tried just plugging the mouse in and not installing any drivers?

You could also try downloading the synaptics drivers, installing the mouse, then the syn... drivers?

It's been a while since I've done it, but try plugging in the mouse before turning the laptop on, then on boot, it should not load the touchpad but instead default to the Windows generic mouse drivers.

Yep - didn't work properly - kept dragging and was so slow.

Thought of the second but if there's a conflict reinstalling the Synaptics stuff might make it worse?? Point is if synaptics is on virtually every laptop why on earth would MS make their software incompatible?

I've seen it before where the intellimouse software removed the synaptics software, but re-installing that fixed it. I learnt to install intellimouse first if I'm installing windows from scratch.

Yeah, MS made their software incompatible. BOO MS!!!!

From the symantics site:

I installed another pointing device driver and I no longer have advanced features.

The Synaptics driver recognizes the external pointing device as a standard mouse. The advanced features are implemented in the Synaptics driver. If you would like to use theTouchPad's advanced features, you must uninstall the external PS/2 device driver and then install the latest TouchPad driver.

First mouse, second touchpad. See, it was synpatics problem after all. Just don't follow their advice, it's pretty bad. Remove the synaptics, install the mouse, then install synaptics.
