Hello i'm trying to play vst in tracktion 2 using an ensoniq eps connected to the usb port on my computer via EMU xmidi 1x1 cable plugged in to the midi I/O ports of the eps. I have e-e enabled in all 3 places and my emu xmidi 1x1 shows up in my midi settings and in the edit page. i connect the emu input to the specific track and enable the recording and i set the output to the main L and R. I'm using a mackie 1220 with firewire connected to an amplifier connected to monitors. I can play the keyboard that pops up at the bottom of the edit page and i can hear the sounds but if i play keys on my eps i can't hear anything. what am I missing? I'm stumped and frustrated and I have looked at everything I can find to try and find an answer(manuals/ user guides/ searching the net)Can anybody please help me find the missing link? I'm wanting to play vsti with my eps to record... not touching keys with a mouse or inputting notes with an editor (which I haven't figured out yet either!) any input at all would be greatly appreciated and might get me closer to a solution.

Could be all kinds of things. Two basic things to check.
1.When you press a key, is there any indication of midi activity in the computer program? If so, the physical connection is at least correct. (Midi out connected to midi in.) This means the problem is in the software setup. Sorry, but I don't know Tracktion. (You've tried just listening with headphones connected to your computer while you play a note on the midi keyboard--so you're sure it's not a mixer problem?)
2. If you don't see any indication that midi data is being received, have you tried setting the keyboard to send on a different midi channel? It's possible that your software is set to receive data on one channel, but the keyboard is sending data on another. (I don't know this keyboard, but it will either have a screen that lets you set the midi channel, or will always send out data on a given channel. The manual will tell you.)
Let us know how things go, and what you've checked out.

I get midi activity as in the level indicator with the emu midi input indicator lights up when i click keys on the board at the bottom of the edit page in tracktion and i get sound which comes through the mixer which is firewired to the pc and is input into an amp out to monitors. I do not see any activity or hear anything when i strick keys on the ensoniq eps keyboard though. I did'nt try plugging headphone sdirectly into the pc. and i've tried changing channels without success. any other suggestions/ and thanks alot for the quick response. I've been screwing around with this issue for months and man I'm bummin'

Yeah i dragged "the thing" which says "emu xmidi 1x1" (since that is the input for the track) to the track and then it gets an arrow connecting it to the track and i also then enabled it by clicking the red r. No luck

If the software is set up correctly, and you're not seeing any midi activity when you play a note on the midi keyboard, the problem is probably somewhere in the chain of connections between the keyboard and the cpu.
More questions than answers:
The keyboard is sending on what channel?
What channel is the cpu\software set to receive on?
You're sure you have midi out connected to midi in and vice versa?
You're sure you have the midi plugs in the right slots (and not in mid thru, for example?)
Some keyboards have a way to turn midi off entirely. Have you checked in the Ensoniq to be sure it is set to send mid? (You've read the manual's instructions for setting up midi? Different keyboards have different quirks...)

I went back and unplugged everything, checked everything, and rebooted everything and this is at least the fifth time I've done this and IT WORKS! I don't know what was wrong but it now works and I want to thank you for making me think that this was so simple it was stupid which made me redo everything just one more time and poof im in business. Thanks so much

Well, it's almost simple, but there are so many stages to check that everyone gets lost now and then. And sometimes you have to do things in a given sequence, or nothing will work. And sometimes things just don't work...
