Free Sliced Beats for KVRians

Hi folks,

I'm actually looking for feedback on these....just a small handful of rex files, that have been sliced accordingly for all kinds of cool playback manipulation.

Anyways, they're all heavy, distorted, and extremely compressed. I'm thinking of putting a Pro-Sounds set together for something like Dimension Pro, or Reflex, or anything else that plays back sliced beats, and would like to know if anyone is interested in the direction I'm heading (by this I mean the style of the beats....yes,no?).

So, download them here, load'em into your favorite beat slicer/rex-file player, and let us know what you think.

These are very cool! Question: some the rx2's seem like they need more slices; the beats fall apart a bit at different tempos. Or is that the desired effect?

No, lol, that's not desired at all. They definitely need more slices...I just couldn't slice them all that effectively due to there not being many areas worth slicing in my opinion. Granted, I was only worried about making sure each slice would sound good when triggered by a note, but they shouldn't be so picky tempo wise.

I also must admit that I still have a little bit to learn about the rex file format...I've never bothered too much with it before now, since all the 'slicing' I've done in the past has been within one vsti or another (reflex, Dicer, etc).

I'll get the hang of it.

Ya know what, it just came to me...I never set the number of 'beats' in recycle when I made these...that's probably why they aren't matching the tempos properly. I'll fix that and reupload them tonight.

I kind of got the idea that you were doing this more for one-note triggering, so I don't mean to be too picky. I can be a real sonuvabitch slicing material properly in ReCycle, I know! I tried re=slicing one of your loops and gave up, because I'm lazy.

Cool loops, though; I'd be majorly interested in something like this. I tend to pull little bits out of rx2 files all the time for inspiration, so this appeals to me, or just standard loops that sound this cool. Either is good.

Well, actually, your loops were set to two bars, which was correct for the ones I had open; what I noticed, however, was that all your slices were locked, and I could not change those slices, I could only delete them with the lock/unlock tool...and I could not set the master tempo, which normally you can, and you can preview the whole damn ting at a new tempo.

Any Rex-Jockeys know why that's happening? Is it "one-shot" mode or something?

That's interesting. What I meant by not setting the beats was this: In the top of recycle, there are sections for the amount of "bars" "beats" and "timing" and then a readout of the tempo. I set bars to the proper setting, and set the timing to 4/4 like it should be, but I never filled in the Beats section...I left it at 0, not thinking of course. Hold on, lemme see if changing that helps any.

Yeah, that's what I understood it as. You don't want to set "beats" unless the loop has extra beats in it, like it's a 5/8 time signature or something; you'd make it: Bars: 1 Beats: 1 Sign: 4/4.

But if it's normal 4/4, just leave it at zero.

Yeah, no biggie; you just gotta use the audition tool, listen and look for the next transient and add a slice with the pencil tool (or try increasing the sensitivity, but you know how "good" auto-detection usually is!). You can use the stretch setting to add some artificial release to the slice, which is helpful for slowing down or using individual hits sometimes.

I still can't figure out why your samples come up totally locked, though. I can't edit any of this stuff I'm talking about!
