software to view songs as scale degrees?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

Hi guys,

is there a small program out there that can display compositions as notation as well as scale degrees? I am trying to teach myself to play the samchillian. I can already type fast and precise on my computer keyboard, but translating popular songs to scale degree confuses the shit out of me... (hey, cool laxative that one ;) )

cheers,
fabian

I'd love to hear your samchillian playing. I think that is such a wonderful idea, being that despite not playing an instrument designed that way being a horn player who solos I oftentimes think of things in terms of intervalic relationships like that.

I uploaded a very embarrassing short mp3 for you to check out. I'm playing part of a lullaby. I used mr ray73 for the piano sound. I could also use my microphone for some primitive breath control (with milestone) or my racing-wheel foot pedals to control velocity, but this clip is without velocity-sensitive playing.

if rapidshare is inconvenient for whatever reason, please do tell. :)
oh, and here is the 'transcribed' notation:
sa s ka s ks i f f a f r d

d k ad d ks iff s d ca

, kk d kk i d d f pa

, kk d kk i f f f
:hihi:

the spaces are just for convenience and to retain some sense of the required timing, speaking of which - my timing sucks ass, but at least I am able to notice that by now. :hihi:

Also I forgot to write down which key some of the songs I 'translated' were in - does it make a difference in mood whether I play a song in a-major or d-major? i always thought i noticed a difference, but maybe i'm just crazy. :D

oh, and here's another one. it's the beginning of mozart's 'kleine nachtmusik' and as with the previous ..erm.. effort  the timing is kinda way off. :D

i played it in d-major

Very, very cool!

Did that program help finding the scale degrees?
I still do this by ear, which is not very analytical :(
but fast.

I'm thinking of making a Samchillian preset for the Nostromo Speedpad but I wouldn't know where to link it to share with other Nostromo-using musicians (apparently it's used mostly for games, I learned about it from a Live user)

I forgot my USB drive, I'll have to grab it tomorrow.

hehe, mostly that program just confused me. i didn't do it by ear, i did it after sheet music. as long as you put samchillian in the right key, you can just count staves, sort of.

if the song is in c major i put samchillian in c major and then take a look at how far from the C i have to jump - sometimes it's a zero jump (a song starting on a C), sometimes it's more than that. ;)

here's a translation of the first view beats of 'kleine nachtmusik'. there are different way to play the same piece, i just chose one that didn't confuse me when typing it. I hope I didn't do anything wrong there - I chose to write the actual notes down as the notes would be played when having sam set to c major. of course the typing is the same whichever key you decide on. :)

Is there a way to change key to a preset choice on the fly so you could have, say, F1 through F5 mapped to a set of pre-chosen keys? I modulate modes a lot, and it'd be badass for my touchscreen player.

i'm not sure really. depends on whether you're on a mac or pc, too. i use the pc software and you can use the number keys above the qwerty to transpose to another key.

plus, you can play accidentals using the left and right shift keys. left shift plays the note flat (relative to the current scale, so if you're in C# major and play a flat C# it'd of course be just a regular C) and the right shift key to play the note sharp.

the F1-12 or so are mapped to preset scales, i think. F1 is chromatic, F2 major, F3 pentatonic and the others are exotic and microtonal scales. :)

Ok, ok, having posted about Samchillian now I'm totally sold on it.

I love people who think up things like this!

I actually have it on this PC but I removed FL and the like and put them on my machine at home but I guess I just talked myself into yet another project.

:) glad to hear that - i love it when people are passionate about their lives and the art they create.

one of the main motivations for me was that i am reasonably good when it comes to typing (i guess about 280 keys per minute) and would love to be able to use that ability musically in some way.

maybe one of these days i'll feel confident enough to subject some of my dilletant noises to the music cafe. :D

Well, you've certainly waited long enough, fabi :smack:

Here's hoping that the microtonal midi out will somehow retune my VSTs like I'm hoping they will...

Hopefully this program will make sense to my "touchscreen player" when I show it to her, linked to Nostromo Speedpad presets.

I just emailed the creator 8)

cool. i just uploaded a small and ,maybe in the ears of many, very ugly mp3 with me playing nubi plus with the samchillian and stormgate's midi-out serving the breath control and vibrato for the accompanying milestone which is playing notes emitted by the ballsequencer run through hypercyclic.

samchillian's microtonal scales make use of pitchbend information afaik, so it only works when played monophonically, btw.

in re: microtuning - just like Fractal Tunesmithy; I was hoping so!

I  Miles'Tone

I  Ball Sequencer, too!

I've used both with FTS.
