Anyone have any idea (or have you read something) about when/if a new wave of portable hard-disk recorders are gonna be released. It seems like the same dozen or so models have been around for five years or so without anything new coming out.
I want something that's 24bit but costs around $500 with a drum machine and USB wave export. The only 24bit ones are huge in size and they don't have a drum machine in them. And they cost lots more.

yes good question cause you're right not too many products been getting released lately - it seems as if the trend is towards making hardware multitracking devices smaller like boss's recent unit. i've seen this one from zoom which i think has come out in the past year or two;

Yeah, they are almost exclusively 16 bit until you get in the near $1000 range. It's enough to dither down to for sure, but when recording real instruments, I feel that the extra resolution helps the material get the most out of the high rez processing we have now (much of it for free). I don't let the limitations I have now stop me from making music, but I don't want to spend that kind of cash on 16 bit equipment at this point. Hope that isn't silly of me.

well here's the crazy part. their tiny handheld h2 recorder is at 24 bit 96 khz, so i can understand why someone wouldn't want this higher up model simply on the bad logic here. i'd say wait for winter namm, something has to pop up this year. also check out the used roland, tascam and fostex multitracks. i'm sure tons of people are unloading that type of hardware these days.
