I wonder what the chances would be of objectively and sensibly rating software people here actually own and use on the basis of a few key points?

At its most simple, you could simply rate each app as (say) -

A stereo audio editor
A multitrack audio recorder and editor
A midi sequencer and editor

And award marks out of 5 for each item. So Audition might get 5,2,0 (as version 2.0 at least has almost no midi functions) and Reaper might get 0,4,3 (no stereo editor, good multitrack, middling midi).

The rule would be no rubbishing of others' votes unless you own and use the app (impossible to police of course) so anyone who didn't like my assessment about would not be allowed to put 0,0,0 for Audition unless they own and use it! One vote per app per user.

Of course you could extend the criteria somewhat (say to include quality of built in FX, ease of use, gui, documentation, etc etc.

The idea would be to come up with something that people considering each app could use as a baseline guide to what might be suitable for their particular needs.

Has anything like this been tried? Would it be not worthwhile or doomed to failure?

To get back at flaming DAW, my biggest gripe is the interface, why can't they use standard windows control? The softsynth follow a similar path of cluttered and unproductive interface. If only google could get in the daw market, we would get a nice clean standard interface.
