I think it's about great rhythm guitarists whose parts sound easy, but may be harder to play than they seem. At least that's what I got from it. All the guys I named are lead guitarists too, so my angles are covered. :D

johnny marr from the smiths and now modest mouse - combines very fluid rhythm with great combination of melody and harmony

ry cooder - astounding sense of rhythm

the xtc guitarists - as per johnny marr but in their own way

Some great examples here.

A few others;

Jon Butcher- another who mines the Hendrix/Mayfield vein of rhythm playing
Billy Gibbons- listen to any ZZTop album
Paul Westerberg- Memphis has one of the classic rhythm guitar parts of all time
Brian Robertson/Scott Gorham- that era of Thin Lizzy had tremendous rhythm playing
Bill Janovitz- any Buffalo Tom CD

I'm a big Joe fan... Could you guess? So it's great to see him recovering from the booze and the Eagles. I'd heard he was touring with the James Gang again... and it sounds freakin' great! Maybe I'll get to see the James Gang live after all. :hyper:

Sorry, I'm stuck in Joe land and can't get out.

In addition to those named before...

Roger McGuinn of The Byrds

John Fogerty of CCR

Peter Buck of R.E.M.

Lou Reed (check out VU's "What Goes On", his rhythm part is awesome)

Poison Ivy of The Cramps

Bid of The Monochrome Set

Robyn Hitchcock

Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows (and later R.E.M.)

Can't remember their names, but the guitarists from The Chameleons were subtle geniuses

Geordie from Killing Joke

Frank Black of The Pixies

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters/Nirvana - The man can play every instrument masterfully - check out the first Foo Fighters CD where he played everything except one guitar track on one song.

Well, I feel like I've regressed to adolescence when I thought about this one. But it does fit the profile of the question and he is a hometown boy, Detroit Rocks!

Oh shit! How could I forget the original guitar combo for The Pretenders: Chrissie Hynde & James Honeyman-Scott... A great band who were never quite as great after his death.

EDIT: and duh... John Lennon... ultimate evidence: the intricate time changes of the bridge in "She Said She Said" on Revolver...

I thought Robbie McIntosh was an excellent player. Gotta agree with Lennon, great rhythm player and we might as well add John Mayer too.
