Good Nylon Guitar for Kontakt 2?

Sampler and Sampling discussion (techniques, tips and tricks, etc.)

OK, here's the deal: I have electric and steel guitars up the wazoo already, but I could really use a decent, multi-velocity nylon guitar. Unfortunately, they mostly seem to come in bundles along with stuff I don't need. (I would love to see Chris Hein un-bundle his guitars...)

SoniVox has a decent-sounding thing, but that only comes embedded in its own sample player, and I would rather stay within the Kontakt environment. (There actually was a workable nylon guitar in the Kontakt 1 lib, but I'd rather not keep re-installing that just because of one instrument. Plus, it is rather limited.)

Good expression for single notes is mainly what I'm after. Some extras like slides would be welcome, too.

Anyone know of something worthwhile in the, say, $50-$99 range?

There's a really nice acoustic guitar in the Kontakt 3 library, and afaik it's from the Chris Hein library (although it's a reduced version). Might be worth the upgrade.

There is a great Nylon in Yellow Tools' Independence Free. Download needs some time, but it's free (other useful stuff included too).

Definitely something worth considering (and here I was thinking my urge to upgrade had finally subsided :x )

Do you know if it has all fret positions for all strings sampled? I guess that would be one of the a major differences between a really flexible and a "ho-hum" instrument...

Thanks, it can't hurt checking it out (at least, not much!). Didn't see any reason to do so when I read about it before, but I never got down to the fine print...

I'm not sure. I just installed it last night and only browsed through the library so far, but there might be some info about this somewhere...

Ahh.. just browsed the pdf with the description of the library. It seems like it's the HORNS that are from Chris Hein. The guitars are delivered by Pettinhouse, NI themselves and others (unspecified). So, my mistake

OK, I've got it working here now... quite nice, similar in scope to the Kontakt 1 instrument, but better quality!

The mexican bass is great too.

vir2's acoustic legends has a couple nylon guitars. It is a player but it's kontakt player so you can load it up in the full version of kontakt.

Weren't the acoustic guitars in the Kontakt 2 (and maybe also 1) libs supplied by Yellow Tools anyway? Probably would be similar.

The nylon guitar in K2 was much simpler than the one in K1, and similar (or identical) to the one in Kompakt. I.e.: Multisampled in very few zones, no velocity layers, and no slides.

The one in Independence Free has more zones, about 4 velocity layers, a slide layer AND added random fret noise, so it is definitely better than both K2 and K1 (although the K1 one also had slides).

But I still think what I'm after is essentially an instrument with all frets sampled for every string, so you can play the same notes in different neck positions -- quite vital to achieve a certain level of authenticity above "basic".

www.vrsound.com has a nylon guitar that sounds pretty good. It's in Giga format but should import nicely into Kontakt. The price is $59. Here's an mp3 demo:

I doubt it has all strings sampled for every fret, tho.

Probably good, but again with the bundles! Is there a rule of thumb in the business that says "no-one will ever buy samples of a single Spanish guitar, if you don't have half a dozen steel-stringed ones to go with it"?? :?

Good find, at least it deserves to go on my shortlist! Nice "intimate" sound, hammer-ons, pull-offs, etc. At a guess, I think it should respond well to some reverb if one needs a more concert-like sound. Sensible price, too...
