Part 1: Use FL Studio browser/wrapper for preset management

The browser can be used to awesomely organize your presets. It's fantastically simply and supported by the native drag and drop of the browser/flstudio host itself. You can create any organization you want, and it's a snap to do. Here's how it works:

1. Load your plugin into a generator channel.

2. Open the plugin UI.

3. In the top left window menu, choose "Save Preset as...". This will create a directory for you that FL will point to for any load/save/browser operations for this plugin in the future. VST plugs are prefixed with "Fruity Wrapper - ". So if you were to do this using wusikstation, it would create a new folder in the directory you installed FLstudio to called "Fruity Wrapper - Wusikstation".

4. Ok, now just click cancel to dismiss that save as dialog. We just wanted to make FL build the folder for us :)

5. Now find a preset you like. Even plugins that do not support FXP/FXB can be saved as individual presets using FST format (fruity state).

6. Now from the same menu choose "Save preset as" again. This time save your preset to disk by typing in a name. Notice that the dialog smartly changes to the directory where you store those presets.

7. Have fun organizing and nesting with subdirectories, etc.

8. When you want to browse presets for this plugin in the future simply use that window menu and choose "Browse Presets"

Part 2: Exporting existing FXB/FXP supported instruments to FST.

1. Load your plugin.

2. Choose from the Fruity Wrapper menu (the thinner down arrow by the window down arrow) and choose "Export all programs as VST preset". When you do this you will be prompted that your current preset in memory will be lost, so save it first if you need. Now a new dialog opens and it shows a directory browser. Find the directory you created earlier. It's a step up (the directory browser is looking at a VST folder in the same level as the Generators folder -- this is the folder you created for your plug in the above part).

3. Click Generators to expand it, then find your "Fruity Wrapper - " plugin folder you created in the above part and choose OK. You can expand/resize the directory window -- I found I had to as lots of text was being cut off.

4. Watch the status area of FLstudio host and it will report which preset is currently being exported. After it's done give it a sec and it will let you know it's done by clearing the status area out.

5. Now choose "Browse Presets" from the window menu, and voila, your exports are there.

A tip: create a directory called "Factory" for each of your plugs, and export their default banks into separate directories within: So you would have for instance:

\Fruity Wrapper - Firebird
\Fruity Wrapper - Firebird\Factory
\Fruity Wrapper - Firebird\Factory\Bank A

Then in that directory you would have the contents of the factory bank A.

For expansions and user banks create new directories in the same way:

\Fruity Wrapper - Sylenth1
\Fruity Wrapper - Sylenth1\EXP NSL RadioCarbon

Then load up Sylenth1, load the RadioCarbon bank and export all of it's presets.

It takes a while to setup, especially if you have lots of plugs, and modular environments like Reaktor, but it's worth it because now you have a working library at your immediate disposal for drag and drop usage.

You can do this same thing with plugins that do not support FXP/FXB format by loading them up and setting them or loading their internal presets, then choosing from the window menu in part 1 save preset as, and do it one by one. I find this is a great way to create favorites for my synths like WusikStation which is great but so hard to organize the sounds with it's internal browser -- now I do not have to I can do it my own way. When you drag/drop the FST to the stepseq now (in a blank area under the current channels) it will actually even LOAD the plug with this format of FST saving.

AWESOME!

Oh yeah, that can be used for effects AND synths both. The best part of this is that backing up the tree of presets is as simple as exporting:

C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FLStudio\Data\Plugin Presets\Generators and the files are small.

I did notice that the plugs that embed many samples into FXP like highlife, dont work so great with the batch export, so be careful with those types.

However! Kontakt2 can now have a FL native library, and so on. It has seriously improved my workflow, and I dont need KORE to organize my stuff, just my windows explorer, some time, and some ambition.

FL RULES.

Another quick tip:

After you've created your library, use the browsers snapshots to save your locations for instant retrieval. Simply choose the snap like Snap 1 from the browser pulldown snapshot arrow menu, arrange the browser by expanding and navigating where you want to be on snapshot recall, put the cursor/select the directory you want to have focus on when recalling, and then from that snapshot menu choose "Rename.." rename it "Synths" (for synths anyway), and then click that snapshot menu again and choose "Frozen" from there.

Now you have a 'favorite' in the browser. If you do the same for Effects, Samples, and so forth, you can whip around the browser VERY quickly. Use the customization options to add directories you want in there and prefix them with a SPACE as the first character in it's text, and it will be at the very top. In my case I have: " [ synths ]" as the name but it points to a directory where I've saved all my plugin presets as FST's so when I drag/drop them onto the stepseq it loads the plug. Dont need to clutter the FLStudio favorites menu with non-fl stuff now :)

yay!

ok, happy tday everyone!

last thing: would a video tutorial help to illustrate this? I could make one for sharing using jing (jingproject.com) and post the link when I get back from thanksgiving dinner or tommorow or the weekend..

A video tutorial would be awesome.

Lots of good tips there; it'll take me a bit to wrap my head around it. :tu:

Yes, grymmjack, a video tutorial would be greatly appreciated.
In case you need it, here's some more free screen recording software: http://camstudio.org/

Wow... I had really never used the browser for much except getting at automation, and found it awkward and silly. If only I'd known!

Using the "export project bones" shortcut I've set up categories for synth, drums and FX, added my most common sample folders. Then I edited the .nfo files to hide everything else (except Current Project, which is useful).
