Hi
Im looking for one more synth to be the final piece that completes my studio. I have a Juno 106, MS20, Jomox xBase 09, Machinedrum, Genelec 8040s, Live 6 and a pile of Vst effects. So now Im looking for something different that compliments the rest. I have been looking into Vitual Analogs like the Virus B and C, Alesis Ion and the Nords. But seeing as I live in Ireland it's impossible to test anything out first hand. So which one is best?
I suppose it always comes down to what someone is looking for personally. Well, that's always an awkward thing to describe but here it goes....
ok, im not really looking for bass or pads as such, as I have that pretty much covered (106, MS20). I (try to!) make electro in the vein of Rother/Boris Divider. I want crisp, sharp, melodic arpeggiated rhythms that's heard in a lot of this kind of stuff (I think Boris actually might use a Virus but not sure). Its sort of the SH-101 sound im talking about but I want something that isn't so limited...

So after all that waffle I hope that I've made it somehow clear what it is Im looking for! As always, any help much appreciated.

Well, since you seem to be very nicely covered in the analog area, why not consider something profoundly digital sounding? Monomachine, Waldorf Q/mQ/Pulse/Microwave (or Blofeld, if it's actually coming out now), Kawai K5000, Evolver...

I know what you're talking about with crisp SH-101 sounding fast melodies. The thing is, no virtual analog synth can really sound like an SH-101, crisp and sharp and yet as "crunchy" and pleasant. A very good VA for that stuff is I'd say Nord Lead 1/2/2X (or Rack). With 26 knobs and 27 buttons it's definitely not a limited synth

. The FM section is excellent for sharp stuff, The filter is very good, and can give you very high resonance while still keeping things usable. But my first suggestion, if you can afford it, is Waldorf Q (not microQ). It's an excellent sounding synth, especially for this kind of stuff (and the best one for pads too). Fabulous unique sound with a lot of character. If you can afford the Q+ (with additional analog filters), definitely get that. Listen to the demos on Waldorf's Q/Q+ pages, and especially the soundcorner, and be fascinated.

If money is an issue you could look for the korg radias. It has a very good vocoder, good drums pcm and decent va engine (no aliasing).

The Virus would give you grain, wavetable and formant oscillators to play with, aswell as a decent VA selection, and you'd get the polyphony increases aswell. It's also the nicest keybed of all the VA's.

If you fancy another analog, maybe a Prophet08?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hmmmm, Im still quite undecided though! The Waldorf Q/Q+ sound fantastic but way out of my price range (I'm limited to about €600-700). The Roland JV 1080, 2080 and the JD 990...looks like too much screen editing (not hands on enough I think). I did actually have a mono evolver keyboard but I sold it as it didnt do it for me. So I suppose it's still mainly down to a Virus or Nord. I've heard many good and bad things about both! tricky decision indeed

Which VA should I buy?!
