Ashdown guitar amps

I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but stumbled on this amp > Ashdown Fallen Angel 60 watt all tube combo with built in dsp fx for £299 http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~nam ... D~2306.asp

I can't say as I've heard of these amps before, but this one seems good 'on paper' and the price is right. I'm not thinking about getting one, just curious, so any opinions on this make?

That little Zvex amp is amazing! My friend uses it with a Vox cab and I simply can't believe how amaing it sounds. He only uses it for recording because it doesn't really get loud enough for shows but the tone it has at low volume is just gorgeous.

Yeah, I'm equally amazed at how many small 5 or so watt tube combos are available, even Harley Benton have got in on them http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_ga5.htm there's also a just the head model and both are good prices.

Yep! From reading the theory behind it, the lower volume is a boon for recording as it gets in the tone-zone way before its volume starts to screw up a mic's ability to capture what is happening in the room.

We've got a local dealer for Zevx stuff who stocks nearly the whole line of products, and I can say first hand that this little guy is very cool. I'm honestly torn between it and the Orange Tiny Terror because the Zevx just has such a vibe to it. I'd want it for clean/semi-clean stuff with a Small Stone phaser on the end of the chain. Digital just can't compete.

I've got the Zevx Wah Probe, and it's the smoothest, most fun thing ever to play. Once you dial in the proximity stuff on it to suit taste, it invites you to get inside each sustaining note/chord and add these little inflections and massage-me moments. Really nice.

I just wish the stuff wasn't so expensive.

Nice price on that. A real GA5 doesn't have the tone knob on it. I wonder if it's a straight up knock off in terms of sound.

the Harley Benton GA5 is an Epiphone Valve Junior clone - so much so that the pcbs actually have Valve Junior scratched off them. They also ship with a generic chinese 12ax7 tube instead of a Sovtek or JJ one. Other than that there is little difference, just one of the resistors before the power tube is replaced with a bass cut tone control. It's quite a dark amp like the VJ and needs modified really to get the best out of it. But for £30 extra it's well worth doing the mods.


I've seen Ashdown amps advertised in a lot of guitar magazines- there does seem to be a glut of cheaper tube amps coming to the fore. Not tried one of these though

Ashdowns sound ok, but the internal build quality is not the best
and they have a high rate of failure. I've seen quite a few factory
rejects being sold by 2nd's liquidators.
