Hi,

I am searching for a sample library with drums that are processed to sound large, heavy, hard hitting etc. Not techno type, but more in the vein of Depeche Mode's heaviest, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Sisters Of Mercy.

Any suggestions?

There was a Martin Atkins collection that came out not too long ago that might be in the vein of what you're looking for. If you're looking for something like BFD or DFH Superior (heavily multi-sampled drums) you're probably going to have to process them yourself. One person's heavy is another person's light after all.

John Bonham drums sound pretty large to me... here is the one we have coming in our signature drumkits:

Steve, those drums sound nice although not as I intended for my specific current case. Too bad they only come in gog/wav? It would have been nice to have those laid out in the same way as BFD, DFH, AD or as a Intakt/Kontakt sample player lib, with the multisamples laid out in kits. Any plans to release it as an addon to BFD? That would be nice!

When will version 2 be coming out?

Hey Robert, can you give me a specific song that has the drum sound you desire? The Led Zep model demos you heard were all done in 2.0 with Kontakt. Its due out before Xmas.

What I'm looking for is somewhat in this direction:

The drums kick in pretty soon, so you won't have to suffer for too long!

You need BFD, and you are just going to have to flat out process the shit out of you're sounds with reverb and compression.

drums in metal bands like Ministry, and Metallica, and I don't know, um, megadeath, and slayer,...

DrumS like this, are mixed by some of the best engineers who ever touched a desk. drums get this big, from, great mic, proper rooms, lots of talent from the drummer, hard hitting, massive hard hitting drummers, crazy expensive reverbs, tons of properly placed compression, FAR behind the transients. with a super slow attack.

But on bfd, if you practice you're ass off, you can accomplish this. but you need that. and probably something like the Sonalksis TB compresser, and a great reverb like Reflect, off virsyn.

You want to make you're drums this big. PRACTICE!!!

No way you can get this from sample set, unless they processed their drums to sound like this. Even then, they would need a super talent hard hitting drummer to make it work. and it would never fit well in a mix. because you would always have the same compression and verb.

do you know what I mean? Sure you can get a sample set, of Zep Drums. and if you process them correctly they will get this big.

but nobody can really sell something that sounds quite like that, you wouldnt be ever able to mix it properly.

Well I don't really agree, this isn't supposed to be rock, as in the Rock Of Gibraltar. Rap/hiphop/electronica use preprocessed samples, not least from albums, all the time, so that's no big deal. If there's a sample cd with sounds of the nature I posted I would be happy to have the mixing problem. This genre is closer to electronica than straight typical metal since it employs sampling, synths, loads of fx.

I agree with ckatrun411's last statement. I don't think BFD is the best suggestion, however, when you consider Ministry, Depche Mode and Sisters Of Mercy were using pretty much exclusively samples, and those are 15-20 years old.

I'd say research the drum machines of the day and look at distortion and compression to beef up the sounds. You can grab some of these older drum machines from soundfonts, really.

In the case of Ministry and NIN, they're mixing in live kits often, and I'd recommend EZDrummer (DFH version?) over BFD, because BFD takes a lot more work to sound professionaly processed than EZDrummer.

and the steven slates, might actually be the best for it.

Frankly I am probably buying those eventually. ( plz note ) I do not know drum software very well, and listened to the steven wave files, after I made my software suggestion. I am pretty much synthesizing all my drums, so the accoustic drum software escapes me.

Funny, who you find on kvr... anyways, I am busy saving up for a multisampler, like possibly something that starts with a K and is from germany... but these babies are totally on my 2008 list.
