It is the most clean and simple windows Clone i have seen.

Didnt know there was anything like this! Its a shame but it will probably end up like Beos or M$ will kill it. Im downloading to test performance - its only 22.6MB!

I tried the live cd of Reactos - it locked up my PC and didnt display a thing which odd, Ive got NVIDIA 5500 which is pretty standard. Oh well. Its one to watch though.

Ditto, Sascha. Ditto squared :D. It definitely seems like OS-X is the way to go for musicians right now, but Ubuntu Studio looks dangerous, too . Time will tell.

I've spoken with my friend (he's a programmer but does nothing connected with music sw afaik) and he was pretty happy about one thing - more sensible directory structure in Vista.

That's a big point for him ...

no more c:/documents and settings/all users/application data/...

I'm still on xp though, at least until sp1 or Windows 7 (anybody seen the MinWin presentation?).

We call it SVISTA here at Greece which means "Delete it". :hihi:

I took me 20 minutes to try Vista and switch back to XP. After this it took me one day to get used to OSX and after I bought a new iMac after tolerating Windows for 10 years. When I first used OSX i told myself " That is what it feels to jump evolution".

I use multiple machines (3-Win XP) all connected via FX Teleport to do scores etc. and bought this machine (Intel - Q6600) after Vista was out for 8 months figuring that the bugs would have been worked out - not close.

It's taken me 4 months, countless service calls, multiple hot fixes and a lot of finegling to get Vista to recognize my basic USB devices. This is not my main machine but it is the the future right? :) so I better dig in and figure it out. It can't copy large folders! Gives me an error message that it ran out of memory (3GB) which Win XP never did. Had to turn off UAC, what a lot of nonsense that is! Vista may someday be usable but right now there are so many hardware and software reasons not to use this thing.

Focusrite Saffire - instant, good drivers those people wrote!
Novation Remote SL 61 - Instant
KORE 1 Controller - 1 month of fitzing
Belkin Flip KVM - 4 months to get it working
Epson Stylus 300 Printer - Failure Vista won't recognize :x
New Sandisk 4 GB thumb drive - Failure :x
New HP USB Hub - Failure :x
Its own wireless device - Failure :x

I used Macs (Logic, DP) for years and will soon be moving back to MAC, hope the UB problems I hear about are cleared up.

Microsoft really laid an egg with this OS

Why are people surprised by any of this? Surely anyone with previous experience would know that any first release operating system coming out of Redmond should be viewed more as a novelty item to experiment with in their spare time, then they go back to their mature and working OS to get any actual work done. Give Microsoft and the industry at least 2 years to release service packs, OS tweaks, device drivers, software updates and hardware revisions... oh, and also perhaps some sense knocked into MS marketing to axe the retarded tiering of the current product with the lite, home, full, pro, ultimate, über, l33t editions and go back to a more sensible scheme, like... home, business and server. There was nothing wrong with that system and it made sense even to the average end-user.

Come on, Microsoft. XP proved that you can eventually make a decent product after a while. Stop developing software by committee. :)

I agree with this comment. And you are right Microsoft Windows has to be made compatible for thousand of models of computers with thousand of components while MAc OS only for the apple computers . Microsoft really has a difficult job to do each time a windows version is released. That is why they never had a real competitor to their OS and they still hold 90% of the market which is very impressive. Os design to PC scale is very difficult indeed.

iMacs had problems with the graphics driver but it was resolved in only a couple of weeks. But then again that was only one driver. So the problems are fewer in MAC OS because there are fewer factors. But the question remains why as a user should i care? In the end I want the most capable computer with the most capable software. And by the time Vista gets there MAC OS or even Linux will be far away and windows will be doing the usual catching up .

Well, people who remember XP with no service packs would be a lot less harsh on vista. Anyone who used millennium would praise it ...With OSX, you basically have 20/30 different computer configurations you have to get it to work on , with Windows, you have thousands upon thousands. I can crash linux in a heartbeat, so i wont even go there. :P It is rock solid, but only after you've configured it to hell and back.

I've had Vista on my laptop for three months now, and I think it's actually pretty damn stable (and I beat the hell out of my computers)... It's only BSOD'ed... what, twice now? And even then, I know exactly why it did one time, and it was actually iTunes's fault (switched to foobar, heheh).

However, here comes bile. f**k Digidesign, and f**k Waves. I paid money for their software, and they don't even bother updating them for the new OS's. I schlepped my 002Rack and all the cords and racks all the way to school only to find out that the DRIVERS required XP as well (here I was thinking that only PTLE was screwed and that I could use the rack with XT or FL or Reaper or...). Anyhow, it's been straight electronic music for a few months now, and I've been wanting to record guitar parts and basslines left and right.

Here's my angry, ignorant question... how hard can it be to provide Vista support? I mean, I understand that it would then open up an entire new can of worms for the support teams... BUT THAT'S THEIR JOB. The worst part is Digidesign finally provided some Vista support... BUT SKIPPED HOME PREMIUM!?!?! Goddammit. The amount of pissed that I've been for the past three months is astounding. I'm never buying another product from either of those companies again (I bought PT for work in Nashville... all the local studios like being able to transfer songs back and forth. Meanwhile, I bought the Waves Musicians Bundle when it was sold through their store for $40. Dishonest? Maybe. Who knows whether it was a promotion or a f**k-up. Looking at how they've handled Vista, I'm leaning towards "f**k-up").

So yeah. It's not MS I'm mad at. Their product is fine. I'm just upset with many of the developers.
(PS... bravo to many of the independent developers who have their priorities in order. You've made my life easier.)

If you know how to setup XP with nLite you can have:

C:\Users\ instead of "documents and settings"
C:\Programs instead of "program files"
C:\Documents instead of "My Documents"
...

Like I happily have :)

XP is actually soooo configurable... unfortunately, all this work should have been MS', not third party's, but as they're all a bunch of morons... I still cannot understand why we can't have a choice of what to install like we had in windows 95. They call it progress? !!@!@@!##$$#! [put your favourite bunch of swearings here].

XP? While it works - it works, no problem here. I don't even see the MS system as I use alternative shell, so it doesn't matter what's underneath as long as it works properly.

Vista? People say, turn off this, turn off that and it'll work like XP. Why upgrading then? I mean, you sell your old car and buy a new one which will go as well as your old one if you lose the parts the manufacturer told you will make your car go faster? Hey, reality check! The same shit people sucked with XP. Windows 2000 is smoother and better than XP, and XP is almost as smooth and good if you turn off this... and that... and that...

get it? If it works, it works. Don't tempt the devil. :)

Before XP I liked MS. Before Vista I was a MS basher. Now I'm MS hater, because one thing I hate is stupidity and ignorance which MS is full of, especially for their customers. We want totally configurable install, did we get it? No sir... however there's nLite. Monsieurs from Redmond wouldn't make something like that so Joe Schmuck wouldn't know whats Firefox, Thunderbird, Media Player Classic, BS Player, JKdefrag, XPlorer2... the list goes on and on...

So yea, Vista is just a phase, and for me not even a phase :). All my software works all right under XP, why ruining that? For what? So I can spend a month or two turning Vista into XP and finally into W2K [and put my alternative shell], so I could have some work done like I used to? Open your eyes people... f**k marketing, save money for hungry kids in Africa and do music. MS got more than enough of your money all ready, twice or even triple more than enough, so f**k'em...

If you want to be a stupid, ignorant, MS zombie.... well, then who am I to stop you. Go ahead, give poor Bill and his deciples some more dough for nothing, or even less.

Cheers!

This doesn't surprise me at all. In fact, I would be willing to bet that the majority of people who are praising Windows Vista these days are those that bought laptops and it was pre-installed. Here we have a carefully controlled hardware configuration, set up and tested by computer manufacturers with Vista certified hardware, device drivers and software applications. Sound familiar? Not too unlike what end-users get when they buy a Mac. Laptop owners almost always get the best OOBE in the PC world.

I'm surprised about the BSODs though, even if only a few. I haven't seen one of those on my XP machine since... well... Windows 2000. :) Perhaps I'm just very careful about the components I buy and how I build my Windows systems, but this one has been the most robust PC I've ever owned. Upgrading this machine to Vista would be kind of... meaningless really. I mean, what exactly do I need that I don't already have? I think I've pretty much reached that point where I can safely say, the limits of my achievement are pretty much come down to my imagination and/or laziness at this point. :hihi:
