Very experimental. Lost in a virtual, pararealistic world without any articulation possible (?) Nice new sound but not really convincing me.

I see your vocal tract model is coming along VERY nicely. Scary nice as far as I'm concerned. I have been wondering though... How "playable" is it. I mean, how much control is neccisary for it to become really expressive, as you demonstrate here? I was surprised at how easy it was to get very flexible results with your "Sounds of Nature" stuff with limited automation or parameter tweaking. Will I be similarly suprised by this?

Anyhow, your work as always is of astounding quality and strangeness. Thank you very much.

Brilliant - can it be modified to model a wookie? I'd welcome a singing Chewbacca in my band any time :-)

On a more serious note: can you play that bear model with midi notes? That would be very useful - I'm imagining a drone bassline that every now and then sounds like an animal. Would be cool just as a soundeffect too for abstract stuff. Do you have to feed it to keep it in tune or does it have a tuning parameter?

the model isn't tuned.. lfos can track pitch at audio rate and be applied to say a very responsive glottis, the pitch of the output is a function of several elements in combination when oscillating, and usually sounds like a natural/organic dynamic. with low settings the modulation would be filtered by the tract.. so yes, synth parts that snarl or sound animaly are definately possible, although i haven't done this much yet.

there's a good, flexible mass of modulators and 4 sets of tract settings, so in one patch you should be able to get close to an intent..

wookies yes.. heard some 'sounds from the film' already, don't know if i'll have them as presets. the articulation here is mainly modulators with casual tweaking.

Mmmm I see plenty of uses for this model. Thanks for being so involved in research fields and building really new instruments.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

intended to post reply last night. internet exploder ate my comment.
I listened to this 4 times in a row. beautiful stuff, Sir!
makes me wonder what the new age movement would have been like with "bearsong" instead of "whalesong" as it's ... totem :D
seriously- I'm looking fwd to hearing more of the vocal tract project and would love to fiddle with it once it's ready for more widespread abuse 8)

Stanlea said it perfectly and I agree. Thanks for riding on the fringe of sound manipulator makers.

Don't worry, I think he's just referring to this classic song by "Trumpets of Truth". They might be talking about another fringe though. The lyrics don't seem to make much sense...

Now about synthetic mammals: would it be possible / not too difficult to tune the model? I know it'll be unstable (just like a saxophone model for instance) and it'll scream and bite and all, but if it's possible it would be great to try. I've been using a Tassman sax model as a bassline and it's just great how it sometimes looses control and sounds like a goose :-) oh... did I just trigger another xoxos project there
