so i'm wondering can i just buy the trigger pads and then buy some acoustic drum stands and the pads will fit on the stands?

Hi, i don't know a thing about drumming but i know i want to do it. and was looking at some electronic kits(i live in an apartment) and none of the affordable ones have sampling drum brains. so i've decided that i'm just gonna buy triggers and use a software sampler. my problem is, there are no electronic kits for sale without a brain.
so i'm wondering can i just buy the trigger pads and then buy some acoustic drum stands and the pads will fit on the stands?

Depends on the pads and on the stands
A bigger problem will be how to connect the pads to your PC. Do you have a soundcard with 8 analog mic inputs for instance? Otherwise there's no way I see to make that all work.
Oh, Yamaha has a e-kit (a brain with some small pads and two feet triggers) for next to nothing: the DD-55. Could be interesting for you...

my brother has a DD-55, not really interested in one of those things. i would like to have it spread out like a "traditional" drum set.
i did see a MIDI convertef from alesis. looks like it takes the input from pads and turns it into MIDI signals. i was planning on using that with the pad and stand set up. for those who haven't heard of it, it's here. from what i understand. most pads use a standard conectivity protocol that is interchangeable between brands? ah yeah, there's a compatability list on that same page. now i guess i just have to find some trigger pads that have some stands i could use.

Even though you're not interested in the DD-55, I thought others might like to know that the bottom of it is molded for placement on a typical snare stand. Works great and feels really solid once you clamp it down.

Depends on the pads.
I have a bunch of roland pads. The v-drum (ie mesh head, which I recommend greatly over the rubber ones, for feel and response) are designed to be clamped onto some kind of 'spike', same as a mounted tom.
Actually, the rubber ones I have work the same, also.
The v-drum, which I use as a snare, also mounts nicely on a snare stand.
Cymbal triggers are designed to mount on a normal cymbal stand, no probs there.
As far as a 'brain', I use the cheap td-3. Used to use an old 16 channel roland pm-16 which I picked up for ~$60 used. Then there's the alesis DM range, and roland sells a little 8 channel(?) trigger-to-midi converter.
With a bit of tweaking, any pad will work with any brain, they all just send a piezo click. Alternatively, you could use a multi-in soundcard and something like kt drumtrigger.

that vdrums site is pretty cool but i think all i'm gonna need for a brain will be a laptop with that MIDI converter that i posted earlier. it'd probably be a lot cheaper and i'd love to use drum kits from hell on it!!!
