If you were going to get either the 737 or the 747 (only one or the other)...which would you choose and why?

I would go for the VT-747sp because it's a stereo compressor with an amazing sounding 6-band program equalizer. But if I had the money, I'd buy both because the 737 has incredible headroom and low noise operation. It also has 3 input selections and a front-panel instrument DI (very handy) along with the ability to apply the eq either pre or post compression for flexibility. But honestly, If I had that kind of money, I would invest it in a new Mac Pro with a ton of RAM, then install a UAD PCI-e card with all of their plug-ins.

But I do feel that it's important to have at least one good hardware channel strip and 1-2 decent mics. I do most of my mixing in the box with some outboard processing, but with the price of software these days, I can't justify spending that kind of cash. That is unless you record mostly external sound sources, then I would invest in some various hardware units, each with a specialty so there's as little overlap as possible.

I've often considered a UAD card but a new Mac Pro with a UAD and all the plugs would be a bit more than 1 Avalon

I do in fact record mostly vocals and guitars (electric, acoustic and bass) and fill in with drums and keys from software.

I was thinking the same about the Avalon 747 or UAD. I've would like for someone who has used both to comment. But any who I going to go for the UAD Nevana X2 which is 2 DSP cards with the Neve Plugs.

Having owned a 737 I just had to chime in.

I liked the Avalon box just fine (and actually dug the compressor, which many people find the unit's weakness).

That said, if you can scrape up a bit more you should really take a look at the API 7600 channel strip:

I've had Neve, Summit, (older) Focusrite, GML, UA and lots of other boxes in my rack. And while they were all very nice, I wound up using API most of the time. Very, very nice gear for just a little bit more. An immediately recognizable sound that I find works on nearly everything.
