I own it because it's a promising app that deserves support and the audio implementation is very good - great SMP support and really low resource/glitch free performance. However since I mainly use a lot of virtual instruments and rarely if ever use midi editors except to correct myself I need good realtime player features which I don't think it has so I don't use as much as I could. While the audio implementation is very slick and powerful I find the midi aspects - in particular the automation, rather over complicated and clunky for me. I prefer Podium for that at the moment - it has the smoothest and most powerful automation implementation I have seen in any host.

Live is even worse for live players though. I sold my copy because of that.

i love reaper for recording vocals and maybe some audio like guitar...everything else, it absolutely cant beat (my other daw of choice) XT2. nothing is faster to me, and while XT2 is still in beta state after a year of development....I still wait for it to mature and even half done its been a great tool to make music fast.

reaper is a tad bit different for hardcore vst-heads methinks, and it caters to a specific group .....the js plugs will soon have gui; a lot of "bands" are able to use reaper in an of itself. i record SOME audio, but like most of kvr im a midiot

thats why it wont be that huge of a hit here methinks....at least until us midiots are catered to more

swivel, that seems to be the problem ...
if justin would focus more on the "songmaking" (arranging, mixing, sounddesign, etc) side, to get reaper enhanced from the "just recording" side, then it would become interresting.
right now, as great as it is, it's more of a "multitrack-wavelab" than a real sequencer ...

Reaper is certainly the type of DAW more geared for recording your songs, ideas, and jams - then add fx, mix down, master, etc. It's not really ideal (at this time) for the type of musician that uses a mouse as there main input device (clicking a mouse in a piano roll to compose a song or try out stuff) or uses a DAW to sequence stuff. Which is good for myself, I don't need to start anymore ideas in a sequencer.

I just need to *play* my instruments real or virtual - and Reaper definately inspires me to just hit record and get it out.

Reaper: DAW and Sequencer, but mostly a DAW

But, use what works best for YOUR workflow and where you are on your musical journey!

the truth is I have barely looked at, I currently own FL7, AA2.0, eXT (1&2), Sonar 5 and Samplitude 9.1.2 pro...do I really need another host?

I seriously hoped to make reaper my new DAW, but I was quite quickly dissapointed by the following:

- no support for multiple audio interfaces/soundcards. This is crucial to the way I work.
- No way to select a patch from a synth patchlist for outboard synths (like instrument definitions in Sonar)
- The whole 'ultra flexible' working style comes at the cost of puzzling screens and dialogues. Not very intuitive.

I am keeping my eye on Reaper so I can give it another go if above issues are solved.

You're missing a number of hosts. And you're behind on versions as well. What are you doing, spending your time making music or something?

I agree. But to be fair, I don't know of any app that has really got a good workflow system for arranging songs beyond the simple linear multitrack recorder concept. Ableton innovated with the session/arrangement view system, but the integration between the 2 is still lacking IMO leaving live as a DJ/live performance device but not a serious sequencer.

Another growing area of innovation is using modular VST plugins like bidule, to expand the scope of a sequencer - for example to encompass a complex sounddesign 'module' and routing within a single, simple, clean VST.

But overall, I'm a bit disappointed with the state in general of sequencers/DAWs on the, as you say, "songmaking" side. Would be nice to see Justin have a crack at this

Interface looks kind of cheap to me, not particularly inspiring... demo song is really bad. I've downloaded it a few times to try, but those aspects turn me off every time. I'm an FL user, for the record.
