There isn't a host out there that doesn't have a list of pluses and minuses, and one person's pluses can be another's minuses, so there's no perfect host for anyone.

Alas, a nice theme doesn't necessarily improve the usability or ergonomics in any way. It won't reduce the number of pop-up dialogs, etc.

(though, to Reaper's credit, being able to dock various dialogues goes some way to reducing this problem)

You're missing a number of hosts. And you're behind on versions as well. What are you doing, spending your time making music or something?

making music? Yes. Finishing songs? No. Oneday I'm gonna be spitting songs out like a hockey player spits out teeth, only because I have so many past the point of no return.

However as for being behind on versions, that depends on how you look at it. I really can't warm up to Sonar, AA and Samplitude just released updates. I have come to the conclusion that getting updates right away is often premature. Often patches come out quickly, I'm sick of installing things, sometimes I swear I spend more time installing than playing. AA is the exception to that rule, it seems AA updates do not need as many patches. However, I cannot find a reason to get 3.0 as I haven't used 2.0 since getting Samp. I will update FL when the final release is out and Samp will get upgraded when I'm comfortable that most of the bumps are ironed out...

What is problem here. You are on KVR. Versionitis is an important part of being in the community. Go ahead...download another one.

It is a good program, but I'm still on Cubase. My reasons are...

- Price is not everything, I do not base my decision on how much something costs
- MIDI editing is very poor and no scoring inbuilt
- Audio editing is unusual (no easy way to crossfade two audio clips unless autocrossfade is on)
- ReWire implementation is not finished (can't send MIDI to more than 16 midi channels)
- I miss my tools (sciscorrs .etc), they are much faster to work with when doing multiple cuts
- GUI / menus are very clutterred compared to Cubase
- No inbuilt audio editing with offline history like Cubase
- No high quality time stretching (e.g. MPEX, Radius)
- Too many dialogs to do basic things (e.g. adding a send, adding an insert)
- Very limited automation functionality (no way to draw automation with mouse, multiple automation lanes are messy)
- No audio organisation (e.g. audio pool in cubase / audio window in logic)
- No freeze
- Stop button in ReWire slave always brings cursor back to start position

The main reasons I considered it...
- Extremely rock solid audio engine at very low latencies
- Good multicore support

you know - you can post those things on the support forum at reaper's site and they almost always get implemented/bettered by the next few releases...

i too, though, would love an expanded audacity type audio editor built in - that would be nice. maybe if they included a really cool synth too.

Wasn't aware of it before. Hmmm... Actually, I don't really use Winamp so much anymore because of Pandora - when I'm streaming content at the computer, it's Pandora providing the content, and in the car I'm listening to podcasts.

Acid, with some shine. Oh, but there's tons of user themes/skins... right, have you looked at them?

The price

Both logic and sonar are significantly better values compared to the commercial license IMO. I use my software live, and make a small amount of money doing so, so I would be (feel) obligated to use the commercial license. It's simply not worth $300 when you compare it to other packages.

The company

Winamp 5. What a steaming pile of Give the reaper guys a year or two, they'll screw that one up as well.

The audio

Editing is very basic. Recording functions are basic (no advanced comping or sample editing or loop manaement).

The midi / midi editor

Hmm. No score. Sorry, I use that almost exclusively when working with midi.

Something not on the list

The plugin interfaces are ugly, the routing is nice but it is also confusing when you begin to get "advanced" with it (compared to other programs which make complicated routing easier, or display in a traditional way), lack of included instruments, lack of interesting effects, the forum is full of garbage and hotheads.

1. No score editor. I am a teacher, and score editor with guitar tab function is a must for me.
2. Lack of advanced midi functionality, although it seems to be coming along nicely.
3. The interface reminds me too much of Acid Pro, which I own, and am fairly disappointed in.
4. Lack of advanced quantize and groove extraction features.
5. I am happy with Cubase 4.1 as an all-around solution, with Energy XT for light, quick stuff.
6. Reaper looks like a great program, and I'm sure I could get along alright with it, with the exception of the missing score/tab editor, but the bases are already covered.
I do keep looking at Reaper on a regular basis, though. When I need what it has to offer that the other two don't, I will buy a license post haste, it's just that it has not happened yet. I do keep hoping, and looking, though....and I think it is a wonderful thing that Jason has done for all of those in the community who can't afford the other full-featured hosts, such as Cubase, Live, Sonar, Vegas, etc. Nice move.
