I actually think that's quite unfair - and as I said before, I'm not predominantly a REAPER user. I have been involved in some heated discussions about REAPER on this forum, in some cases provoking those discussions. But when I decided to give Reaper a serious tryout and went to the Cockos forum for some help I found the users there extreemly helpful, and the overall tone of their forum very good indeed. Far more so than some other forums I could mention...

How do they know it's not popular? I'm unaware of any definitive and reliable place to get sales figures or installed user base numbers. So, is it just the feeling that Reaper hasn't had the market share it should have by this point? I mean, "popular" is just so ambiguous, anecdotal if you will. Just curious.

Between Logic, Live, and Pro Tools I really don't see a particular reason to use Reaper.
I still haven't tried it yet. Maybe someday I will.

For what it's worth "Reaper" is the absolute best new show on television.

Too bad it might get cancelled while that ghey ass Gossip Girl lives on.

So why aren't YOU WATCHING Reaper? :?

There are constructive people that use Reaper and a few trolls like there are constructive people and a few trolls who use FL or Cubase etc - same as anything, you get stupid kids and sensible adults using it at the same time. There is nothing different per se about people who use Reaper.
I assume you've been on the reaper forums? The s/n ratio there, even in relevant threads, is absurdly low. That's not a sign of a generally intelligent and helpful userbase.

There could be 90% of the users who are great people, but those people don't spend much time where it counts (in this case, their open forum). Even k-v-r is more well behaved and helpful than the reaper forum, and that's a forum specifically for a product.
Yes I have and that's complete and utter rubbish. The Reaper forum is very helpful and friendly with a high proportion of intelligent and skilled members - not least due to the fact that it has rapidly attracted some of the most innovative plugin developers around at the moment (like Scot Stillwell, Loser and Schwa as well as Justin and Cristophe). More than here in some respects. More to the point - I treat people as individuals, not as representatives of everyone else who uses a particular software etc. I have met a reasonable number of idiots that use Cubase and Sonar - I don't see that as a problem of "Sonar users" but of those individuals and them only. Anything else is an insult to the rest.

As a "something not on the list" reply, I was mighty suspicious that minutes after loading the Reaper demo, the outside world brought me a torrent of spyware, virus alerts, and all manner of system f**k-ups and disabled functions. :x

I flushed Reaper in the process of cleaning up the shite, and won't be back. Coincidence? Maybe, I dunno, but I'm not out to discover the hard way. YMMV, of course.

What thread is that? I missed that thread, it seems.

And what is this thread? If not an attempt to ruffle feathers? Hats off the the folks here at KVR that have resisted the urge to descend into dismal flaming!

I own and use this all the time:

Haven't seen this in years. I suppose there's a copy somewhere in XP. :hihi:

Why would I put out yet more money than I already have on something new that's not nearly as good as what I've already paid for just because it's "cheap"? If I went around buying everything that was "cheap" just because it's cheap, then the costs would add up pretty quickly wouldn't they? It's not really "cheap" if I'm spending money I don't need to spend on it, is it? That sounds more like an unnecessary added expense to me. Anyways, I voted for "the fans" because those guys are like cult members or Ron Paul supporters.

I love how the main complaint boils down to "it's not a sequencer". Maybe that's because it's not a sequencer. Just a wild guess...

Anyway, as someone who uses it primarily for audio recording and editing, it's the bees' knees for that. Stable and fast! I suspect the majority of happy Reaper users share this opinion.

I think it's reasonable to hope that Justin and Christophe will bring the MIDI capabilities up, but at present it's not Cubase/Logic/Sonar/FL/T3... so, use Cubase/Logic/Sonar/FL/T3 and go in peace.

I'm sorta glad that Justin and Christophe have kept to their own aims and philosophies, and have not tried to accomodate every single request. Otherwise who knows what it would look like...

I've been installing and using Reaper since v0.6 or so. It's never been a vector for a virus, nor has my A-V software ever flagged any Reaper installer. So, coincidence, yes. You just gotta stop ordering \/1AGRA online. :hihi:

I knew this would become a 20 page thread... while I try my best to not knock something..

( I often fail too )

It was a "why doesn't Reaper get more respect" thread. This thread is a information gathering attempt by me so that the next time I start shooting my mouth off about why Reaper doesn't get more respect I'll know more about what I'm talking about. There may be a few ruffle feathers but by and large it's been civil and very matter of fact in a "in my opinion" sort of way.

So what are your conclusions so far tomg?

That I was mostly right to start with... but at least now I'm not totally guessing about it.

Sorry tomg, right about what..? The fans? the MIDI? the 'happy with your current host"?

I have read the whole thread and as far as I can tell, there is no clear consensus as to why people choose not to use Reaper, which is pretty normal I guess.

Asking the question in the first place is valid, whether for research or just plain curiosity, but I'd still like to know what you think you were right about. Don't take offence mate, I'm genuinely interested.

i own a personal license. i dont use it much because i prefer other hosts (see my sig). why? that's a really good question. when i use reaper i feel disconnected from the music. i cant explain it, but it feels more like engineering or something than it does in other hosts. i'm not a stupid person quite a power-user in fact, but there is a disconnect with the way reaper works and how i prefer to work. i think the win32 look and feel is part of the reason for this disconnect as all of the other hosts i use (save orion) are drastically different than win32 look and feel. oddly, i have nothing against that theme/generic stuff but it was the same with sonar for me. i am a UI snob i guess.

the stuff that's been done for the skinning engine really makes me reconsider, but no offense intended when i say this, none of the skins built yet are something i'd want to use regularly.

i bought the license to support it, because justin is a great coder and it's really a good program if it's the right fit.

reaper certainly is a good program, and i can guess that if i was not such a hostwhore and had so many others that i really like to use (flstudio, orion, live, t3 all drastically different but each with it's own strength) i would probably use it much more.

as it stands now i have yet to complete a project with reaper. it has crashed on me a few times before - and yes the other hosts crash too - so i've felt i couldn't rely on it/trust it until it matures. i have not yet tried the latest version, but i did try a 2.x with white tie's theme (nice work - but not for me), and i really like the new mixer stuff, but after the few minutes of looking around at the new features i just shrugged and loaded other hosts when i needed.

perhaps making a skin for it myself i would get into it more - doing that for orion has really increased my productivity - but it's such a daunting task to consider in this hectic holiday time. it's one thing i have on the backburner though, i'm not giving up on reaper just waiting for it to really romance me away from the competition.

hope that helps a little bit. if it makes anyone feel better, my favorite host (t3) is unstable at the moment and i've been relying on flstudio and orion and live for all my stuff lately. bummer, that. but it could make the reaps feel better.

there is no perfect host for me, each has it's flaws/downsides i guess. so that's my 2c. it's not necessarily ONLY the interface, but the way the interface works and how the program reacts to my needs and stuff i guess.
hope that helps.
