Basic Sampling Disk Question

I'm just entering into the world of sampling libraries. The most basic of questions...what's the difference between a CD Rom and an Audio CD of the same title. The Audio Cds seem to MUCH cheaper - is there less material than on the CD Rom? Or is it the same material but organized differently and more problematically? Thanks in advance.

The audio cds are just that, audio, and you will have to sample then map, loop and whatever else you need to do to get that sample to work as you need it to. A cd rom with data on it is in a format, such as Akai that can be read by a sample player and those files include all the data needed as described before, loops, mapping, and so on. For beat loops, and one-shots like sound effects, this may not be such a big deal, as you can just rip the CD, save the wav files and use them as needed. But for multisampled instruments, you're much, much better off with the cd rom, for all the work that will save you.
