Have a look at the latest Tracktion demo (version 3.0.3.3) and you'll know why I don't use Reaper!

REAPER's uncrippled unexpiring shareware though. YOu can try it fully for an unlimited amount of time, despite the nag screens urging one to purchase a license.dusted william wrote:I'm going to give REAPER a serious try this weekend.

The price for reaper is certainly great and if it stays that way I may use it when its fully mature. For people starting out I HIGHLY reccomend it. I don't use it because I already own Sonar. Specific things I don't think are up to par:
- The interface. Yea I know its skinnable and some of the skins are cool. its still not elegeant on many levels.
- midi editing ain't there yet
- score editing not there at all.
- The few times I tried to play around with it, it was not at all intuitive to me how to get started with some instruments plugins. I know, read the manual.
its making progress at a blinding pace. Like I said, if it stays this cheap and matures into being on par with Sonar/cubase/logic/samplitude/performer, then it would be a no brainer at some point to try that instead of my annual $180 upgrade for Sonar. But it ain't there yet.

Reaper is great, especially for the asking price, and if develpment continues at the present rate it will be up there with the big commercial sequencers in a couple of years (but will Reaper3 be $599?), the internal routing and rendering are top notch and it is possibly the most cpu economic of any sequencer,... but as of yet Reaper does nothing that all comercial daws don't. it needs a unique selling point, like Live or Reason.

Most of the helpful features people use, software company tout as new "features" and users beg for, are macro's. Basicly you can get Reaper to work how you work. For instance; I like to chop up loops and rearrange them. "tab" moves to the next transient in loop.
"s" slices at the cursor.
Audio clips can be grouped with midi clips.
Normal tracks can be turned into folders.
Using the above I can make what Ive been begging developers for YEARS for; the ability to arrange sound slices locked to its midi equivalent. And using macro's I'd be able to do this with 2 key presses. So no pestering developers, flame wars or learning how to program. I have a tool tailored to my way of working, and I haven't even begun to read the manual

Is more about the overall experience of using XT2 vs REAPER or other DAWs for the matter.
One of the last thing I noticed about XT2 that is missing ,as far as I now in REAPER and which is of great importance to me, is the Automation Parameters pop up List which list of the Synth or FX parameters without going to mess with the CC. REAPER is quite sophisticated but for me "Less is More" and XT2 seems to do that at least when it comes to the interface.

I dont like the way Steinburg treats its customers. Its the same reason I wont buy any Native Instruments products. Companies like these have got away with "yes I know we said it was a feature of this release but we can only fix it in the next paid update...Maybe" too long. Keep in mind that SONAR 7SE has almost all the same widgets and functionality of the Producer's Edition - including all the cool new MIDI stuff - and at $299 makes it competitive with Reaper as far as price goes.

Actually it has one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet (I think) and may seem like a tiny thing but actually it's something I wish all Hosts had. Reaper uses a file format that is editable in a text editor. How many of us have experienced corrupted files in a programme and been unable to do anything to fix them and had to wait for the dev to fix the programme but even then often the files are lost forever. I'm having this problem at the moment in NI KORE 2 where it's toasted a number of my SOUNDS (those created in KORE 1) and know this has been a big problem with eXT 2 and was once a problem in Orion too and I think in many other hosts from time to time. It's so frustrating when you lose a project and can't do a damn thing. In Reaper it's possible for anyone with a bit of support. One reason I bought into Reaper even though I still don't use it as my main Host - I really like the Devs philosophy which seems to be all about user empowerment and the opening up and democratisation of music making including no closed formats or copy protection systems. This is a good example of that in practice.
