I searched for the original Tsaiko thread and it seems to not be on KVR any more. At least when I search for it the page says the post doesn't exist any more.
Anyways, I've not done much in the way of soundtrack music. However, I want to really expand my horizons and really learn more about orchestral works.
I normally do pop/contemporary acoustic music. Would this library fit into much of that type of thing? I know it's not "normal" for a drum like this, but are there patches or sounds that can fit more into a regular percussion type backing track?
Any thoughts are appreciated. I'm a bit tired, so my words may not have made sense. But I'm basically looking for user reviews on playability, variety of sounds, etc.

Hmmmm, well, you'd have to have room in your mix--they're big drums, and great for very epic, cinematic sorts of music. But there are close mic samples, too, if you want drier samples. There are a lot of variety achievable with the Tsaiko library--I find it very useful. Just keep in mind, they're BIG drums.

How much variation is there in the close samples? I do like the large sounds and will use those as I learn more about orchestral stuff. But if I wanted to use them for some basic percussion without loads of room sound, is that possible?
(oh, and how's that fretless library coming Greg? Aren't you the one working on that?)

The close samples are pretty nice, but I'm not convinced they'd mix with tradition acoustic percussion for a rock/pop song.koolkeys wrote:How much variation is there in the close samples? It's coming along. Just need to tune up the samples and whatnot. It'll be a nice little set. I was sure to sample vibrato notes and whole-step slides, too. Well when I say using them for percussion, they would be the main percussion behind some pads and strings for mellow tracks and whatnot.
About the fretless, that sounds great. I'll probably consider that when it's out.

I can add my two cents here. Keep in mind that this is a $50.00 library. The basic library is of 4 similar drums. They are expertly sampled with lots of detail. There is something like 4 mic positions. There are a lot of patches - everything from close to big boom.
But whether it would work in acoustic pop I don't know. It sounds nothing like a Djembe, Asiko, or conga. It is bigger than that. But it is an acoustic drum. So I think it would blend with guitars, etc., but stylisticly... I don't know.

I like Tsaiko quite a lot. Even if the original taiko set was just a couple of drums, the presets cover a very wide range of taiko sounds. The recently released expander makes it even better. You can get anything from very dry taikos to something impressively massive out of it.
Can't say I would have heard too many taikos in pop setting but why not. At least they would make a decent replacement for a kick drum.

Well, in a way, I'd like it to be something like a replacement for a kick drum. I have also thought that they could come in handy in place of a conga drum set. There was actually a demo on their site that I missed that fits the exact idea I'm looking at.
I've been trying to get into more orchestral works lately and just want to expand a bit. I just figured this is something I don't have. I've got pretty much everything I could want elsewhere(except for that darn fretless guitar that not many are available!).
One more question. I didn't quite understand what the expander set was. What is in that? Was it more samples from the drum? Or other samples of miscellaneous sounds? Any demos of it available? I didn't see any.

The expansion has more taiko hits (with double sticks) and also stomps and shouts. There's also lots more patches. I don't think there are any official demos of those yet.
