Connecting outboard effect unit

Hi and merry christmas to you all.
I was wondering if anyone could help...
Last year I replaced a Mackie vlz mixer and a Presonus firebox soundcard for a Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 rack sound interface. I sold my outboard effects racks to (lexicon mpx550 and a Behringer Virtualizer Pro).
I now wish I kept the outboard effects and I am thinking of buying another.
I would like to know though, if it was possible to route the effect unit to the Saffire card?
On the mackie mixer, I had send and returns to hook and route, yet the Saffire has only straight ins and outs.
Is it possible to route and effect unit rack through the Saffire? Or do I need to buy a small mixer to do so?
I can't find anything in Focusrite's manual to do this?
I know this might be a dumb question, but any help or advice would be greatful. Thankyou.

How many audio inputs/outputs are on your interface ?
What host do you use ?
I use external fx in Cubase 4. It's as easy as configuring a pair of spare inputs/outputs on your interface to use as external fx. You can also ping the device to compensate for latency.
I think this only works in Cubase 4 and SX3.

I use Cubase Studio 4, the Saffire has 8 analog ins and 8 analog outs.

Hi there. Just route a pair of 'outs' from an unused channel, and return them from the FX units to an unused pair of 'ins'.
Then, in your DAW, just route any dry signals you want processed through those 'outs', and input the wet signal back onto your record enabled track. It's hard to tell you more accurately because it very much depends on how your sequencer plays with its track directions.
The saffire is, as you say, just a well specced in/out unit, and any of those ins can route to any of those outs. The only downside is that you lose a pair of I/O's to do this... but you could always buy another 10/10 unit and daisychain them.... Hmmm, focusrite multi-channel bliss....

it'd only create a feedback loop if you then routed the recorded track back into the FX unit.
I'm not Cubase, so I'm not sure about track routing options, but I know that Logic had just the same option. In fact. there was a good article about outboard FX track routing in last month's SOS magazine.
As posted above, if the routing of a VST out [via FireWire], then then back in via FW through your FX unit causes delay, then there's a simple ping/adjust you can do.

Create an aux send and assign to one (or 2 is stereo send is desired) of the DA's outs. Route that to the hardware input.
Create an aux return, and assign to a pair of the AD's inputs, and plug the hardware outputs into them.
You can, if desired, record the efffects, but there's really no need, and this method will process in real time.
