Speech samples and voice FX

Hi guys,
ambient music tend to be strewn with various samples of more or less monotonic voices speaking short snippets of sentences that are more or less coherent, to create a "detached" effect that will fit almost anywhere within the genre.
Question: WHERE does people get all those samples? Do they watch hours and hours of obscure movies to dig out these nuggets and sample them? Or is there a resource somewhere that everybody but me know about? I want that. Hmm.

Any tips?
I am also interested in VST/RTAS effect for processing own voice samples, i.e. telephone/radio/crappy spaceship intercom voice FX...etc.

Also in NNXT format and you could process the vocals with Reasons fx if you own Reason

Hard to judge from the demo but the scifi one at the beginning is good.I am tempte to get it myself btu whats the rest of the content like,there are 665 samples!

I hadn't thought to use wiki to find public domain films but thats a great idea.What do use to record/extract the audio?

For MAC users, here are a few options:

- mactheripper (free) to rip entire DVDs and extract video + audio.
- Audacity (free) can be used to cut and paste audio to get what you want.
- Wiretap pro (not free, but not very expensive) will record any audio coming out of or into your mac.
So, if you can watch a movie on your computer, you can use that to record whatever audio you want from it, "live" (start recording, play the scene, stop recording).

I'm not on a mac but for the pc there is VAC and Jack.Just tried VAC and i was recording audio from firefox into ableton in minutes

Forgot there isn't as much out there for the mac.Isn't more software been ported to mac as well these days?Maybe things improved since then.

I think Reason would be a good program though if all else fails,Thor is a powerful fx unit and you can manipulate sound in many ways.I bought the movie dialogue refill,given the time it would take to find 665 samples,record,remaster and categorise them i think it was worth it.I took a chance but it is good,the usual standard from loopmasters,lots of useable stuff

I thought there would be.There is a standard public domain wiki but i've come across others i the past that are more specific for other things like drum and bass.Maybe vurt knows of some..

I could have sworn I used Audacity once to record the audio coming from the sound card.

When I get home, I'm going to see if REAPER can record the audio coming out the soundcard.

Hi MM,
there is lots of stuff for the mac. But for music plugins, the vast majority are VST for PC - which is also reflected in the database on this site. Another obstacle on my behalf, is that I run a RTAS host. AU seem to be the most popular format for macs Fortunately, there are converters out there, but the Universal Binary issue is still there as well. Wee!
