does anyone know where I could find free soft mallet drum hits in sample, soundfont or vst formats? I'm after the sort of sound that's in alot of sigur ros songs and the song "climbing up the walls" by radiohead. Thanks.

It's an unconventional thing to ask for. Either you'll have to ask a real drummer to do it for you, or on any drum mix, add a quick soft-attack and a slight LP filter to emulate the sound somehow.

The only mallet library I have is the NSKit7, but I'm sure there are more drum libraries with mallets out there. I will say that NSKit7 is very incredible and highly recommend it, though.

Ones I know of are NS7, and DFH Custom & Vintage. Neither free.

recently either Krakli released a synth called BEL, but dunno if there are mallet sound available on it...
