Good for you! I'm in the same situation right now (see my thread on "Dealing with impossible neighbor"), and we're going to move out sometime within the next year to a place where I'm going to actually construct a studio with soundproofing and acoustic treatment. It's actually an apartment we bought, but it's new and much better constructed then the old apartment we've been living in, and we're allowed to do additional construction/changes within the unit, as long as nothing changes on the outside. I can't wait to have all the soundproofing and acoustic treatments done and get to enjoy my setup to its full potential finally!ugo wrote:For the last 7 years I had not been able to use it because I lived in apartments. I barely plugged in at all, let alone ran two cabs. But I kept it all these years because I knew one day I'd live somewhere where I could properly jam again. Most of my current basses had never even run through it before. So when I moved in here last week, one of the first things I did was hook up both cabs and got to hear the real low end those basses can deliver. That was a very sweet moment.
I guess it's about time for an update for me too, since I just got a bunch of new gear (no gear porn photography this time--just straightforward photos):
Warwick Corvetter $$ Double Buck 5 String (Now I know why Warwick's motto is "The Sound of Wood."):

Line 6 Variax 700 Electric (I know a lot of purists don't like Line 6 products, but I don't think of what they do as perfect emulations--I think of them as simply sonic palettes I can choose from.):

Line 6 Variax 700 Acoustic (Their acoustic line actually is probably the best sounding of their entire Variax line.):

Line 6 Variax 700 Bass:

Ribbon, breath controller, and expression pedal for my Kurzweil PC2X (Breath control sucks. I regret getting it. You cannot do smooth volume fade in at all, but volume fade out is a lot better.):

Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor pedal, Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110 Bass Modeling Combo Amp (The little bass amp performs surprising well, even on a 5-string's low B.):

Warwick RockStand 7 guitar/bass stand (Spacing between each slot is a bit closer than I'd like--you will knock your axes against each other unless you are very careful.):

Audio-Technica 4033/CL LDC mic (Sounds beautiful. Very clear, bright-sounding but not shrill at all. Now I just need to add a Shure SM7.):

Two el cheapo old axes I've have for years (Fender Strat, Famous Luthier nylon string classical) (They stay in tune. Can't ask for more.):

A couple of overall studio shots:

BTW, today's my birthday. I can't f**king believe I'm 35 now. I feel 18 still...

So you've got two 192 I/Os, two Sync I/Os, 6 Rosettas, a Big Ben, a Midi I/O, god knows how many Accel cards... That is an absolutely gorgeous rig!Midiworks wrote:Happy new year 2008 !!!

I used to have an AX73 too but I made myself sell it when I bought the AX80 and the Bit One. I kind of wish I had held on to it. The 73 had a very aggressive sound...totally different from the 80.Stupid American Pig wrote:I miss my AKAI AX-80, thanks for reminding me I was a knucklehead for selling it, ugo.
I haven't written anything using my hardware synths in many years now, so I only wire one up when I'm in the mood to mess with it. I usually just keep a midi out on the WSA1, for when I want to play keys instead of the padKontrols.DevonB wrote:Ugo, I just noticed... ummmm... where are all the patch cords? The place is huge...there's an entire other side of this that's not in the pics which is where I have the TV. (And then there's the big storage room too.) This basement alone is larger than my entire last apartment.tconrardy wrote:Way to go! Looks like you have LOTS of space!
My mother wanted to buy a house as a long term investment, so she bought this beautiful place and is cutting me a killer deal on the rent so I can live in it. (And so she doesn't have to rent the place to a stranger.) So I just went from living in an older 700-odd sq ft one bedroom apartment, to a big beautiful brand new townhouse.
This is the first time I haven't had everything I own jammed into one or two rooms. Its wild having this much space. I don't even know what to do with it all, but home owners tell me that it won't take long for me to start finding ways to fill it up.
Yup, its an SK-5 that I circuit bent several years ago. You can't see it well in the picture, but I've got a makeshift knob box hanging off the back of it with 6 pots and a few switches.I see the Casio SK1(5) ? in there too!
Absolutely! I've been using the padKontrol as my master controller for around a year now. I was never comfortable on keys and in particular have never liked key travel. Coming from a background in bass, my brain likes to hear a note pretty much right when I touch an instrument, so I love the nearly instant response from the pads. I immediately took to playing melodically on it. My timing noticeably improved when I started using it too.say..is that two Korg Pad controllers there? Have you ever used them melodically?..that is NOT for drums, for as an alternate controller? ( you KNEW I was gonna ask that!!)
I keep them tuned chromatically and found that I really enjoy playing/writing with the notes in this grid layout. I've got a bunch of scenes setup for different octaves and its easy to jump to another one, but the desire to have more than 16 notes available to me at once is what made me buy a second one. My hand independence is nearly non-existent though, so I do most of the work on one and reach for the other to cover the overflow, rather than my doing much playing of both at the same time like a keyboard player would. (Though I wish I had the skill to do that.)
If I could find someone to make it, and if I could afford it, I'd love to have a custom controller built that would essentially be 4 padKontrols in one, with all 64 pads arranged in one huge square. (Plus aftertouch, which the padKontrol's are missing.)

Well I guess I may as well also reveal the secret of the true source of all my synth sounds:

I think there is enough house and concrete between me an the neighbor on my right to keep the noise under control for them, but I am still a bit concerned for the neighbor on the left. Their house isn't attached to mine (about a 15 foot gap) but my gear is on that side. Before too long I'd like to do a sound test and have someone standing outside while I play, to see how much sound makes it outside, and at what levels. I don't play too loud anymore, but bass has the tendency to travel so I figure its best to find out about this more sooner than later.Lunatique wrote:Good for you! I've never done any soundproofing or treatment, but here was never much point in my doing it before because I couldn't do much with the apartments I was in. But here I may do some of that now. I'll have to read up on it if I find that too much sound is leaking out of here.I can't wait to have all the soundproofing and acoustic treatments done and get to enjoy my setup to its full potential finally!
Thats a sweet looking Warwick.Warwick Corvetter $$ Double Buck 5 String (Now I know why Warwick's motto is "The Sound of Wood."):

What about a harmonica and a comb, that would finnish the set off? Don't be fooled, that is what they really use in recording studio's. Save yourelf a few dollars.Ja.x wrote:Yes, but can we automate itlotus2035 wrote:I hope its analog..I cant stand those new digital ones..they have no soul, no personality and are the work of the devil...ugo wrote:
