I encountered this via the CDM blog, and thought it might be interesting for my fellow KvRers:
noatikl is a generative (MIDI) music engine. It creates musical information in the form of MIDI notes, and can also generate and send MIDI controller information to control settings of your favourite synths, FX units and samplers.
There are variants available for both Win and Mac OS X, including plugin versions for e.g. Logic (AU), Sonar (VSTi, DXi MIDI Effects), Cubase (VSTi, MIDI Effects), Ableton Live! (VSTi), Reaper (VSTi) etc. as well as a standalone version, very useful in its own right, for where there is no suitable plugin variant, e.g. Pro Tools.

noatikl is written by the same people that made Koan back in the day.

Hi Folks!
This is Pete Cole of intermorphic, creators of noatikl.
I've just announced noatikl 1.0.0.31 to one of the forums. I hope you all give it a go, we've added a nice new Win/Mac installers, the option to automatically capture noatikl sessions to MIDI files, and a "cooking" mode to batch-create lots of alternative takes from the same noatikl file "as fast as possible" to MIDI file recordings. Oh, and we seem to have fixed the "hanging notes" problem that had been annoying some of our users.
I know lots of KVRs have quite fond memories of Koan. Hopefully you'll give noatikl a try and support us in our efforts to bring generatie music into the 21st century.
Pete
