Hi all,

I'm about to release a new version of AudioPaint, a free program that converts pictures into sounds. Kind of similar to Coagula in principle, but with different possibilities.

Anyway, I could use some help to design a dozen of (mostly basic)icons. Let me know if you can help! You can check my other tools on my web site (www.nicolasfournel.com) and see by yourself my obvious lack of skills when it comes to icons :-D...

Nico

What's new in AudioPaint 2.0:

- entirely rewritten (from C++/MFC to C#/.Net)
- audio engine optimized for speed
- no more limitation on the duration of the sound generated
- processing is now a background task
- processing can be cancelled
- can import Scala files for the frequency scales
- can generate a sound from hue, saturation and brightness in addition to red, green and blue levels
- generative algorithms enable the creation of pictures composed of lines, curves or clouds of points (for granular synthesis for example)
- new function automatically finds suitable pictures on the web and import them in AudioPaint
- projects saved in XML for easy import / export to other tools
- floatting window for better visualization while scrolling
- pictures dropped on the main window will automatically be imported it
- PDF documentation

happy new year nicolas!
that's great news, can't wait for that.
sorry, though i don't think my icon skills would be good enough,i hope someone else will offer....

Happy new year to you too, spacedad! Unfortunately, it seems that the world will have to face the ugliness of my icons. Probably the end of civilization as we know it... :-D.

Last night, I was playing with the new random curves generation and scales settings in AudioPaint, and got some vaguely Chinese instant music with a picture that looked like a plate of noodles :-)).

So here is my one-click one-minute performance: "Instant Noodles" :-))

Hide your cat, it's just a bunch of high frequency sine waves :-)

Hi Nicolas,

I'm a little confused (as usual). Is this Blip, which I haven't had a chance to open yet, or a truly new AudioPaint? The reason I ask is I use AudioPaint quite a bit and was about to reprocess a massive load of pics. I'll put that off if this is AudioPaint 2.

I constantly use nearly everything you've made. You make these operations so easy to use. Your work is indispensable to me. Thank you.

PS: I hope you haven't abandoned releasing your Microsound app.

Hi d4l3d,

This is indeed a new version of AudioPaint (yes, I know version 1.3 is from...2002 I believe :-)). My plan is to release it this week-end. Although the sound should be the same, so you can use the 1.3 version in the meantime.
And to add to the confusion, there should be a new version of Blip soon too :-D...

Nico.

Thanks Nico,

The new functionalities such as "no more limitation on the duration of the sound generated" will make it well worth waiting for :)

I assume it will take audio samples like before. I know, I know, I should just wait and try it.

I noticed you sidestepped my PS. I won't press.

Post

Yes, it will take the samples like in the previous versions.
Concerning Microsound, well, this new version of AudioPaint is the proof that things can still happen, even 6 years later :D

I've dragged this a bit off topic. Sorry. To get back on track. I wouldn't worry too much about your presentation. Your reputation transcends that. The important thing is that everything works well. In use, it doesn't take long for any "eye candy" to be taken for granted.

This is coming from a retired, "aesthetics over all" unrepentant, compulsive (but cynical) graphics designer. And no, I don't know how to icon :(

Post

Thanks, d4l3d. Well, the (ugly) icons are done now :-).. Still a couple of bug fixes and it should be ready.

Oh cool, a better program than CoagulaLight!
Watching. :)

Post

Hi MaliceX,
I would not say it's better than CoagulaLight. I simply wrote the program for my personal use, so I had different priorities. CoagulaLight has some graphic functions, but I thought it was easier to use something like Photoshop or Gimp to create the pictures. However, AudioPaint can use samples, has Scala scales import, can generate sounds based on hue, saturation and brightness levels etc... which opens the door to a lot of new sounds. Also, I have a few things I want to add in 2.1, like wave analysis and batch processing of pictures, but I'm not sure when I will have the time to do it.

I just put the new version on my website, along with a few random sound examples.

I see I'm a bit late but for future consideration, these icons are nice and free: http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/

Checking out your plugs now, thanks, look really handy :)

AudioPaint is really really cool.

Any chance of making a MIDI version?
