Hullo

I'm interested in the soundtrack of some movies found on the mighty internet archive. How can I easily convert the video files so I'm left with audio only?

These files usually come in mpeg1, 2 and 4. I tried simply changing the extension on one I downloaded but it did funny things to the audio, and the file remained huge.

Any ideas?

Try a different way of doing it. Use something like virtual audio cable (VAC) to allow you to record the sound as the video plays back.

dBpoweramp is a converter that I use for this sort of thing.

I recommended SUPER video converter...

You have the option of converting audio only to mp3, ogg and wav. It has a bug where the new file will have two extensions, the old one and the new one. Just rename.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think VirtualDub is capable of demuxing MPEG movies.

As MaliceX says - all you want to do is demux the video - split it into the video and audio parts.

ProjectX is a free proggie that will demux an mpeg file for you.

I use a really old version of Adobe Premiere for this! Most commercial DVD players will play back mpeg movies. You just have to plug the audio jack from the player into your soundcard...

Thanks guys. So far I just played back the film and recorded the sound in Audacity, etc. but I thought there might be a "cleaner" way of doing it.

yeah, there are 'cleaner' ways, several of which have been posted here already.

If you need to do this again, there are a bunch of freebie demux apps available.

This is one, works great, free (already linked above, but hey)

Depending on which host/s you have, just load it up and save the audio. You can do it in acid/soundforge but i'm not sure about others.

I use Tracktion and eXT, own Reaper too; I think Tracktion 2 might do it.
