Hi all,
My son just got a Mac Pro and a Digi003. He gave me his M-box2 for my home studio. I just purchased a new HP pc w/Vista (i know, I know). I would like to be able to record two separate tracks simultaneously. Will the M-box work for this?
I have a simple PC set up.
Reaper software.
Inst & mics > mixer > PC.
Midi kybd > USB port.
I would like to run the mixer > Mbox > PC.
Before I do the rewiring, I would like to know if it will work? Or will an M-box work without a Mac and PTools?

You can use the MBox with other software, yes. You'll need the ASIO drivers download off the Digidesign website.

I would advise caution. You need Vista drivers. According to this thread, there are issues :

The M-box should have come with an install disc for both PC and Mac. Simply install Protools on your windows machine. Then the two of you can swap session files easily.
If you want to use other software, it is possible, but perhaps not without issues at the moment.
The short is all Digidesign products are crossplatform and work in both Mac and Windows format.

Yep...I have the ProTools for Windows disc, but it will NOT install on Vista.The M-box should have come with an install disc for both PC and Mac. Simply install Protools on your windows machine.....
So, the M-Box won't work outside of ProTools ?If you want to use other software, it is possible, but perhaps not without issues at the moment.

it wont need selling at all 
at worst you may need to update some drivers for the mbox and check the mbox/digidesign website for a vista version.
i know it works as a friend has pt and an mbox on his new laptop setup
and yes the mbox should also work with other hosts no problem.

The M-box will work as an ADDA interface with any DAW.
Knowing Digi, unless you have the latest PTle software, then it probably won't work on Vista. Check the Digidesign website. At present it doesn't look like there is Vista support, so most likely there will be a new software release eventually (that you will have to buy) in order to use this hardware.

Well....I like the software I use now and I don't HAVE to use the M-box so its not a big deal. Although, I would like to be able to record multiple tracks at the same time.
Its too bad about the Digi and Mac products.....I just purchased a Mac Pro and a Digi003 rack as a gift for my son who just graduated with his BS. Of course the University where he was going used all Mac, Digi and PTools. I've always been a little leery of those products because of their proprietary nature.

hold on to it, they will update the drivers soon enough, then use it with reaper or any host

However be advised the M-box is only 2 i/o, so you can only record 2 mono or one stereo source at a time. Plus, being USB, the latency is not great.
AFA the proprietariness of Digi and Apple, there isn't any. Digi is as compatible with Windows as Avid can keep up with. Just because there is not a current driver for VIsta, doesn't mean there won't be, and there most definitely will be eventually. In addition, you can use Digi hardware with pretty much any software.However Digi protects itself against software piracy by limiting what hardware can be used with their software. Thus a pirated version of the software is useless, it won't launch without the hardware, and the hardware sells with the software included.
IMHO their antipiracy methods are genious, it's their discontinuation of support for hardware after a few years without substantial improvements to existing replacements that bothers me, and why I personally refuse to spend my money on their hardware ever again.
