Hi Guido! I'm a Mac AU coder.
I just had to take a moment to say- I am LOVING your work, and you can count on me to become a customer when Mr. Ray works in Logic on OSX.
I'm thrilled with how well the 'modelling approach' works for software instruments- it's just uncanny. What I'm hearing isn't that you're replicating every speck of dirt on the tines- but you're getting the PERSONALITY which is by far the most interesting thing to me. I shall be following your career with GREAT interest

That's because Wurlitzer is electrostatic, and Rhodes has colorations from the electromagnetic pickups. I overlooked that because it would be so easy to take care of with other plugins and such. In a way, I like Ray better without a bunch of fake 'pickup color' because I think I could apply that better in other ways if I wanted it... that stuff is MY bag.Watto wrote:I realise you're happy with what you've done, so there's probably no point me adding my thoughts, but that mp3 was an odd experience for me. The little noises etc made it sound very realistic, but I still wavered between Rhodes and Wurly while listening...

I don't really get what you mean, jinxtigr - are you essentially agreeing with me that the Rhodes sound hasn't quite been nailed yet...? And that at times it sounds more like a Wurly...?
Incidentally, and as a bump, I'm only offering that opinion from Guido's mp3, as I still can't get the new beta to work in REAPER

Actually, now that I read it again, I see what you mean, but think (a) there's quite a big difference between the sound of a Rhodes (tines) and a Wurly (reeds) whether you bypass the Rhodes pickups or not, and (b) I would have thought Guido was modelling a Rhodes through it's pickups, in any case.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a Mr. Tramp update after this.

I personally think that MrTramp is almost perfect . . . almost. The way to reach the best result, in my opinion, is really short. It should be enough just a little update.
For what regards MrRay II (I have a Rhodes MK II and a Wurly A200 at home) I've listened the last MP3, and I quite agree for what concern the similarity with the Wurly, expecially in the superior part of the keyboard.
IMHO, this issue should be correct, because Rhodes and Wurly are two conceptually different instruments.
Anyway, the work Guido is doing is really excellent and I trust we'll can get soon a very beautifull official release of this new virtual Rhodes.
Thanks ZioKiller

Confusion between the Rhodes and the Wurlitzer has always been an active topic through years, and still is today. It's easy to see people on forums to swap the two in a song or asking "is this a Rhodes or a Wurly?", or in the store, you see people trying a keyboard, load the wurly patch and say "Yamaha has better Rhodes sounds!" Many people still think that "Bloody well right" was played with a Rhodes. In the movie "Ray", in the opening scene you see the actor who plays Ray Charles play "What'd I say" on a Rhodes piano...
And what if you'd also listen to a Hohner Pianet T? It's very similar to the Rhodes but less belly.
I've spent hours with some recordings trying to understand if that was a Rhodes or a Wurlitzer... and some notes on my Mark I sound too "wurly-ish" regardless of how I can adjust the tonebar screws.
The Rhodes is one of the hardest instruments to simulate, that's why the best fake Rhodeses are all sampled (see Scarbee, Dusty Electric, and the Clavia keys)... - I'd also say that sampling is easier than modeling...
-
There are too many variants of the Rhodes tone: bright, dark, soft, barky, slow attack, fast attack, sloppy keys, irregular, well voiced, well tuned, damn out of tune... How can we decide "which" one is the perfect Rhodes?
Mr. Brandstetted brought 4 brand new Mark 7 at the fair, they were factory new, perfectly tuned and voiced, but still they sounded different one each other.
What's your ideal Rhodes? And yours? And yours? And mine?...
Let's roll a dice and pick one...
@Watto: I don't know what's wrong with Reaper, but if it's the same bug that made a similar alert appear in Wavelab, maybe I've found a fix.
@gsoto: all the strange behaviours that you noticed are part of the simulation. A real Rhodes is even worse sometimes
@jinxtigr: thank you for your interest. Making Mac ports (VST & AU) is my next goal, this is why Santa bought me a MacBook...
New beta demo and audio example coming very soon. I've replaced the "dead keys" limitation with the good old noise burst which gives 10 seconds of peace and playability

Hi Guido,
I gather from your post that you're happy, then? We needn't bother giving our opinions? As I said, I've owned both a Rhodes and a Wurly, and spent a lot of time playing both, so I'd like to think I'm a little more informed than the case studies in your first paragraph.
You have my complete respect as a developer - I think you're the best at what you do, and you've broken new ground in many ways, as well as always maintaining fair prices. You do occasionally seem defensive, though, and your post was pretty dismissive of some educated opinions...
Anyway, I'm very keen to try to get it working again in REAPER, and I wish you the best of luck.

I'm still going to maintain that if it sounds too much like a Wurly, change the curve to "Really Hard." Doing so made all the difference in the world here.

Well, I hope you're right, and I'll be the first to post in an ecstatic manner once trying it, but so far, the mp3 is all I've got to go by.

...which leads me to ask, can you post a demo using the really hard setting, mate?
Btw, the reason I posted at all is because I know from producing/recording/engineering etc that sometimes you can start down a path, and keep following it, and don't realise you're getting further away from your objective. I'm not claiming with any surety that that is the case here, as I haven't tested it, but my original post was meant to be constructive, an opinion from an outside party.

Watto, I'm sorry I've been misunderstood or if I may look like arrogant or somehow rude in my last post, it could be due to a language barrier, as usual.
Of course I still need your opinions and I do my best to let different opinions gather together in a single result, but all I want to say is that it's not that easy most of the times, especially when speaking about the Rhodes sound.
I should have made this plugin months ago, and I was on a certain path, but eventually all the different opinions I got led me to think that I was on the wrong path, so I gave up. Ask LearJeff, he tested almost all the numerous variants of MrRay that I came up with...
This is quite embarassing for me, I know what I want to do but I don't know where to stop. Ok, now I'd better shut up and post a new beta, so you can test for yourself.
