Not just flutists. I believe this is the only page I've ever seen that explains why cilindrical and conical bores behave differently. I've always wondered why an oboe does what it does and never could find an explanation.
Flute: simple. Open pipe. (Really, I learned this wavelength stuff in high school.)
Clarinet: simple. Stopped pipe. (Barely more complicated.)
Oboe: looks stopped, so why does it behave like a flute? Read that web site.
