Looking for interface and monitors

Right now, I have the Event 5 monitors and JRJ Rokit 5 Monitors with an Mackie Onyx 1220 w/ Firewire Card. I was going to upgrade to the MOTU 896HD and Adam A7 monitors, but I hear that MOTU sytem has some problems hardware wise (frequent failures in something). Soundwise it's great. The Adams I heard were not so great in the bass end which is pretty much remedied if you buy the P11's, but a friend was telling my about the monitors from Dynaudio for around the same price. Said they were good. Someone also recommended the RME Fireface 800 instead of the MOTU. Any thoughts guys? I need at least 8 in and 8 out 4 of which have mic pre's and most with instrument level inputs.

To my knowledge there is NO interface on the market with 4 instrument level inputs. Typcially you get mic/line switchable, with a couple inputs that are instrument capable at best.
AFA monitors I highly recommend before you ditch your current setup you use what you are considering in your control room beside the current system and do a few mixes to see if there is really an improvement. The Adams are quite nice, but so are the Events, and the KRK's are a good compliment. In addition, if you have not done, or have inadequately done acoustic room tuning, I highly recommend you complete that before spending more money on monitors. Get the room right, otherwise the accuracy of what you are hearing, no matter what you use for monitors, is compromised.
The Onyx pres and converters are superb, and IMHO the MOTU will not yield any better audio. The 1220 does what you are asking for; you have 4 very nice mic pres (IMHO better than the 896) and all 8 inputs can accept instrument level signal. The 896HD is mic or line input only. To input instrument level signal you need to go through a DI, otherwise you have impedance mismatch.
IMHO you should consider adding on or getting a bigger Onyx interface if your existing 8 i/o is not enough. Another option to increase your mic pre input is to get a couple nice mic pres. (Check out the FMR RNP, 2 pres for under $500 that are amazing.)

I've heard that MOTU offers great performance on Mac systems. They used to have sub-par drivers for Windows. Weather that's ironned out by now I don't know.XTREEMMAK wrote:I hear that MOTU sytem has some problems hardware wise (frequent failures in something).
RME gear is almost a no-brainer if you can afford it. Very good quality hardware and software...
