Far nicer than mine. Made my first electron tubes when I was twelve years old. "Peanut" triodes, bare wires, no pins-and-socket for this. Worked well enough until the vacuum weakened (I couldn't get the envelope to seal right around the wires; oh well).

[edit] I also hadn't the benefit of all those fancy tools this guy's got. Cool stuff.

[edit again] Thanks for the link. Interesting video. Though I didn't turn on the audio I think everything was pretty clear. Not only is his final product much more professional than mine (which looked VERY "crafts-y") but his process is quite refined and uniform (made mine entirely by hand, one at a time, until I finally got a few that more or less worked).

not that i would want to make tubes or anything. i would like one of those things you press and zap weld with it looks like a handy tool for something i am making. anyone got some idea what its called?

That's a "spot welder". And if you can find a busted microwave oven with a *really* mighty transformer out on someone's curb, you can construct one:

i think its a spot welder, but a small non portable one.
the portable ones for cars are really crappy.

Tonal benefits? I doubt it. The appeal (as I understand it) is to use devices you crafted with your own paws to communicate across the planet. Similar to grinding and silvering your own telescope mirror, then using it to observe galaxies millions of light-years away. Or crafting your own boat, or guitar, or garden. A dramatically direct connection exists between the maker/user and the objects of the activity in which the object is used.

Some people consider the challenge of doing stuff like this much of the fun, instead of simply purchasing what they need. I'm not one of them.
