so i have this m-aduio fast track ultra. i need to be able to use all 8 outputs for a surround sound performance - problem is one of the stereo outputs is the spdif. does anyone know of a good relatively inexpensive device that could convert this spdif (its the rca type connector) to a stereo analog signal?
any help/links would be greatly appreciated!

Any unit that has spdif and analog i/o would do the trick. More important is your unit's ability to clock the spdif interface. Otherwise your spdif audio could be very glitchy.
Best to get a proper surround interface IMHO. Not worth the hassle of multiple interfaces.

this was the best solution i could come up with... still a little expensive intotal than just buying a single presonus-fp10 but from the sound of spdif's picky sample rate/word clock functionality there's probably no better way to go:

I think a lot of older Mini-disc units had SPDIF in, and line-out, seem to recall them being recommended for monitoring purposes inoffthesky wrote:so i have this m-aduio fast track ultra. i need to be able to use all 8 outputs for a surround sound performance - problem is one of the stereo outputs is the spdif. does anyone know of a good relatively inexpensive device that could convert this spdif (its the rca type connector) to a stereo analog signal?

systems where the analog plugs were full, but digital still empty, common with
e-mu 0404, amd m-audio 24/96 setups...good luck!

So you DEFINITELY need 8 outputs and 6 is not enough?
Can you maybe route what's on the SPDIF outs to one of the headphone outputs? If care is taken (keep volume low) you may use that (with aoppropriate adapters) as a stereo line output.
Does the computer also have a builtin soundcard? Can you use that also? E.g. with ASIO4All you can merge multiple devices into one big virtual ASIO device.

thanks guys... yeah i wish i still had thee olde minidisc but i gave that up for a zoom h2 long ago. unfortunately the internal routing of the m-audio fastrack is currently set in stone (and whats worse, theres even two stereo headphone outs which i can't reroute to!) but i do have an echo i/o so perhaps i could use that in a separate program... which is of course a pain in the butt - but.. no pain no gain?
