hi all

im trying to find the (for me)best linux system for my laptop(fujitsu siemens 1,70ghz 2gb ram)

and my choice is on these 2

dynebolic and linux mint

in dynebolic i have problems getting it to use the screen resolution i want it to,and theres problems every time i close it down(but i like the music software that comes with it)

just tried running linuxmint 4,0 from live cd today,and it finds the right screen resolution and theres no problems when closing.
(but was checking the package manager out,can i install those programs i can choose in that,without using the internet??as my modem doesent support linux??

which one of these would you recommend me??for ease of use

When you talk about your modem, are you talking about a dialup modem?

Some of those are winmodems, windows only, as you say. I would imagine you could find a hardware modem, say an old USR one, that would be completely supported by Linux, for about 10$, probabably for a boxful, if you have a used computer store around.

If you are actually speaking about a cable or adsl modem (ie highspeed), I can't think of a reason you would be unable to use Linux with it.

I have a supra USB modem, and linux detects it as devTTYACM0, (zero, not oh) and using KPPP for dialup, the graphical configuration is simple. I would suggest PCLinuxOS, Mepis, or Knoppix, as they all
allow easy dialup with kppp, (from the live media too) as normal user, not root. If the Mint version you have is gnome only, try using the synaptic package manager to install a minimal KDE, and
something like KdeNetwork-dialup,

and there is also a gnome-ppp program I have used
thst is similar to kppp. It is older, but google = still out there.

Individual packages you have can be installed by

rpm -i path-to-and-name-of-packageXXX.rpm or
dpkg -i path-to-and-name-of-packageXXX.rpm

Only the root user can do this, or a normal user using the sudo command.

At a prompt, type su
reply with your root password.
You will now have a #prompt at your root directory. Assume you have a file in your
/home/user directory, type

dpkg -i /home/username/myfile.dec or if on a rpm based distro,
rpm -i /home/username/myfile.rpm or

sudo rpm -i etc etc and answer the prompt for your password.

Once online, to fetch it from a default repository, or one you have added, if you have synaptic installed, the command would be

apt-get install myfile -no extension needed. you could

apt-get install kdebase

and it would list all the needed files to download and install a working kde, and ask
you if you want to proceed.

but try the distros I mentioned above, and kppp/gnome-ppp

Once it's working, just copy your Dyne to your / directory, and establish the 'nest',
so you can dual boot, and eject you CD as needed!

Hi Jan, sorry for the delay...
This is Sackbut from the future telling you that Dynebolic will return, at a version 4 Beta, if you can wait a bit. It might even be able to run on your crappy 2008 system just fine.
