Something like the KvR Database for software or Vintagesynth.org for synths, except featuring hardware pedal/rack-mount effects?

Try Harmony Central. It's a bit messy but they have tons of user reviews.

Yeah, unfortunately there isn't a really good organized/categorized comprehensive hardware effects list I know of. As fac said, there are tons of reviews on Harmony Central, mostly by idiotic guitar players boasting for 4 paragraphs about their "setup" and then writing a few useless lines about the hardware itself, and by people saying they "hate it" or "love it, it's the best" without explaining why. But sometimes there are surprisingly helpful comments that may even save you a lot of trouble.

LOL, that's true. I used to visit HC regularly, but now I rarely do. Mainly because now I know what kind of gear I'm interested in and where to find good information about it.

But I agree there is a lack of good hardware gear review sites. The other day I was looking for a site with a decent amount of drum machine reviews and couldn't find any, except Sonic State, but it misses a lot of newer models.

the particular reason I asked, other than a proper hardware database being generally very useful, is because I'm looking for distortion, and rackmount distortion is mostly fixed on vocal processing and the world of pedal distortion very rarely goes near any kind of scientific specifications (look in any boss manual and the closest you will get to an idea of the shape of the wave-shaping curve is a short description using words like "fat," "warm," "metallic," etc.

are you looking for new or used stuff? i don't know much about rack distortions, but i would just check the pawnshops and find whatever is cheap, they all sound different....can't go wrong with a Big Muff

you can probably find a cheap Boss SE50 half rack, a bit annoying to program but cool "lofi" digital box...and then there's the Yammy SPX family....also check the various Sans Amp boxes....
