Looks like Omnisphere will provide Atmosphere-like sounds that are controllable, rather than being "static" samples. I wonder how much of the core library is actually "useable", though. Sure, it sounds cool, but who's using those demo sounds in any real song?

I think that it will be even more usable because with Omnisphere you can turn any of the layers off, whereas with Atmosphere you were limited to the prefabed textures, which would not always fit.

without trying to be a buzz-kill, I'm really worried about a plug that is a "replacement" of something that was mentioned almost two years ago that we have to wait another (allegedly) 9 months for.
My concern is certainly not price or sounds, of that there is no question, but what about the cpu???? I can't imagine something that sounds like that being "light"

Didn't you read teh fine print? It said "CPU Upgrade not included in the price."joeykusack wrote: My concern is certainly not price or sounds, of that there is no question, but what about the cpu???? I can't imagine something that sounds like that being "light"

I'm sorry I'm confused....DevonB wrote:Didn't you read teh fine print? I can't imagine something that sounds like that being "light"I just hope it's not a memory pig like RMX is. I've watched my memory on the Cubase thread jump up to 800,000k and higher multiple times with just 6-8 tracks loaded in and nothing else.
RMX was the reason I turned my page file back on in XP otherwise it crash the system with low memory errors.

a. I got a nice laugh out of the "cpu not included"
b. I was not aware that rmx is such a ram hog. I've always thought it was pretty efficient

Load in Cubase (I was watching this on Cubase SX 2 at the time) or your host. Go to Task Manager under Processes look at memory usage. Load in RMX. Watch the thread grow 150-200 megs. Keep loading in loop after loop. Watch the thread grow another 300-500 megs on top of the initial 150-200 megs. I used to advocate turning off the page file for maximum performance in XP. After RMX, I couldn't do that any more. I had no problems with Atmosphere or Trilogy at all, but that's the UVI engine.joeykusack wrote: I'm sorry I'm confused....

Don't get me wrong. RMX is my MOST USED plug-in of all time. I pretty much use it on every tune I have written in the last 2-3 years. I need to look at RAM usage with the latest version, maybe I'm completely wrong now, and things are 100% better. Validate for yourself though. I was just confused as to why a loop player with only 6-8 loops loaded would take up hundreds of megs of RAM.
Basically my point was I hope Omnisphere is better than RMX was for resources. Everyone worries about CPU usage. That ain't the only limitation.
If I have an opportunity this afternoon, I'll go revalidate my experience with Cubase 4 and repost my results. I have my fingers crossed that things are better now than they were on initial launch of the plugin. Anyone else want to try themselves and show new results, have at it!

I'll try and remember to do that with my cubase 4 and see the deal.
Anyways, thanks for the info.

Yeah ... RMX is a dog, which is why I almost never use it. It eats memory for breakfast, and I have 4GB in my DAW. Interface takes a long time to load, as well, which really annoys me. It feels heavy, and I don't like heavy. I seem to recall what's happening is that when you click on loop menus, it loads the whole menu into RAM for faster switching, but it doesn't (or didn't) clear the memory when you'd move on to another menu. And eventually, if you do a lot of browsing (as I do), it gives you memory errors.
So, here's hoping that I can load at least 5 or 6 instances of Omnisphere without it choking my system. The disk-streaming of samples is promising, at any rate.

Instead of hijacking the thread, I started a new thread over here. I don't want to drag down a perfectly good thread on what everyone is excited about (including myself) into an RMX thread.joeykusack wrote:I'll try and remember to do that with my cubase 4 and see the deal.

"So busy" is pretty accurate, look at this full house!!!ben_horwood wrote:christianmusicmaker
Be sure to give Eric a scratch next time you see him, because I am sure that he has been so busy that he has not had the chance to scratch himself.

Even people from the M- Audio/Digi and Motu stands in the back ground appear to be part of the 'extended' Spectrasonics booth. Impressive!

Cheers DevonB.
Unless I am mistaken there should be a new Omnisphere video up by tomorrow 22nd. "Next Episode coming January 22nd" Should be great.

Saw it at NAMM and its amazing. Period. These are not just 'samples', its a full blown synth. SOme of the sounds the guys played for me were really out of this world. The amount of control one has is amazing as well.
This will be the new standard and everyone will buy it.

The demo was definitely impressive. Lots of potential for sound designers and 'glurpers'.
I'm probably in that photo somewhere off to the right because I saw 3 demos on Friday and Saturday!
Definitely one of the standouts at the show.

Don't ask me, I just play here.
