hey everyone!
i'm pretty desperate to find samples of a certain guitar technique / setup.
it's all over breakdance / new wave funk records, like
Break Machine - Break Dance Party:
or Shalamar - Dead Giveaway
it's monophonic, a kind of muted sound that sounds very slappy.
it sounds too high to be a bass..
i can't seem to find any decent sample pack with such a sound (multi-sample would be the best thing). has anyone found one?
do you know any other bands from this period using this?
thanks!
Luis

The guitar action is probably pretty low, so it pops easily. Seems like the guitarist is palm muting, but letting out a few notes to pop.
I sampled this guitar sound before, I just never got around to chopping up the session file (that's the time-taking part).

Here is how it's done.
You know your regular funk guitar strums.
Here is your 16 beats in a bar.
D = Down
U = Up
1D 2U 3D 4U....all the way to 16
The more common funk rhythm style would be to play a 9th or whatever above, muting and un muting to create the groove you want to create.
Another technique (I believe the one in the video above) is to play the same strum patter, up down, mute when you want, but you only pluck three strings. You mute the two outside strings with your fingering hand, and leave the middle string open to ring or mute whenever.
Try it, it's a bit tricky and I've never mastered the skill.
..but I bet a few months of practice and you'd be tight.
I'm convinced that is the way it's done.

Chris Hein - Guitar is perfect for realistic funky picking using palm-mutes.

The E-Guitar has 1.200 muted samples.
With the expression slider (cc11) you can blend between 6 variants of mutes
from dead notes without tone, to completely open, each with 8 velocities
and individual up- and downstroke samples with intelligent automation.
In addition there are pickups half-tone, whole-tone and a lot of noises.

Ekko, do you have Kontakt? If so, I just might have a belated Christmas present for you.
