Announcing a different kind of sampled drum: The Real Snare Drum.

The Real Snare Drum is a sampled Slingerland Sound King snare drum in sfz and Battery formats. It features an innovative and playable mapping and an extremely user configurable sound.

Mp3 Demo (a simple bit of improvised playing, just the instrument with nothing else added)

Mp3 Demo, with free kick drum supplement This demo shows off the controls a bit. For (roughly) the first half, the individual microphone levels are played with. For the next second half, the EG controls are played with. Needless to say, you wouldn't play with the controls like this while using this in a track (unless it was experimental), but it shows a cross section of the gamut of sounds you can make with this instrument.

That's awesome.

I used to jam with an insane drummer who could melt your face with the tiniest kit. Make it sound huge. And he said the reason was that one drum could sound like three or four depending on where you hit it. So this reminds me of that nugget...nice job.

huiii, that sounds corny great ...have to check your site now .....!

got it ... what a good idea! ... and more to follow .... i totally agree with what you say about enormous libraries without a sense for playability.

Thanks a lot!

The allusions you've made to samplesets 'gone wrong ways' is the key point. I've been working with samples for, like... ever and felt they started down a wrong path in the very beginning (late 70's Linn stuff etc)
I could ramble on and on why but lets just say some 'interesting' assumptions were made by developers based on what the experts at the time guessed at
But as I'm not an expert in the field, I just suffered with what was available and worked as best I could with it all.
The physical limitations of human interfaces unable to be programmed to make (my idea of) proper use of all the velocity layers etc has helped it all become meaningless to me.

The slap in the face is me, having to take individual 'sounds' from some humoungous set of instrument sounds and reloading them into my multi-sampler to make use of the few sounds I can't get my velocity-sensitive controller to play.
I mean, how many damn layers of little thingies do I have to wade through to get what boils down to a few sounds because frankly, the rest of the subtleties gets lost in the mix.

I think you've made a grand departure from the rest of the pack (pair of dimes shifted) with this sampleset and have created just the right mix of hits from a snare drum to make it.
I ALWAYS want soundsets to sound just as if I would actually play the 'real' version. (or more likely in my case, just as bad as I would hit the real drum :D )

expecting to purchase this as soon as I'm back someplace with a 'safe' internet connection

Thanks!

I have to say, that I have been getting many positive responses to this idea. I think I have struck a nerve with this concept, perhaps because I am going at this from the point of view of a drummer.

How long till we see other drum samples from your collection? For 8$ I'm in! :)

My first thought was that I already have all the paradigms I need, just get me some good samples, but the mp3 demo sorted me out. Ordered. :hihi:
