Some little bits I discovered while playing with SC for days:
-SOFTENING PITCHES: If you dont make your pitches higher than 300-320 cents(if you do, lower them), use in the mod matrix an envfollow to LPfilter(880hz in my case to contrast with low filter type) with negative values(like about -3.00oct to -1.50.oct), and pitchbend_up to pitch (+0.7/1.5st range) and pitchbend_down to pitch(-0.7/-1.5st range).
-SOFTENING NOTES: Same envfollow as above, except if you want open notes use positive values. [Alternate to AEGattack at 2.00] (with main AEGattack at 16.75/31.25ms range, AEGdec and AEGrel about 62.50/250ms range for clear passing notes),[random+- to sustain(-37%/-25%)] and main AEGsustain at 50%-75%.
Of course you can do the same with a lag to filter, but lag decays too fast to my liking.
-SEMILEGATO: If you have a lot of variation in your notes and dont want to sound all connected, (some kind of glissando), use poly and porta at 31.25 with the softening notes settings above.
Now if there was a way to connect pitch bends with zones (like keyman_sam says) with some form of transition ... that would be killer.
hope you find use for this, Some instruments sound way better with softening.

This isn't a proper technique, but i thought i'd share this with you guys cause it totally changed my shortcircuit experience...
I've been trying hard to make SC2 my main sampler, but some shortcomings, and stability problems really gave me a hard time.
Sc1 was a real pain to manage for me, simply because you can't browse and preview samples, a no-go in my book.
BUT in the last few days i realised that foobar200, media player extraordinaire, also does one hell of a job at managing samples too !
With the facets plugin you can easiely browse the content of your library, then make playlists for selected sample sets etc, and just drag n drop from the playlist viewto the SC mapper, works beautifully !

That actually is a fantastic tip! I'm glad you shared it with us!
Guys, please don't be shy - share your tips even if you think its not entirely related to SC, but enhances the use of the sampler in a way.
Disturb,
I had a similar experience with Samplecatalog. Its a sample management application, and free. It rocks with shortcircuit.

hey guys,
i was wondering if anyone found out a way to somewhat replicate the layer behaviour of SC2 in SC1, without using different midi channels ?
I'd like to use variations on some drumsounds in a kit, so they would need to be assigned to the same keys.
Only thing i could think of was velocity splits and messing with the sensitivity to get them to respond in the same way to incoming notes, but it's a bit awkward.

Does anyone know how to make Fade Outs of a sample, so that it does not arrive to the loop starting point or fades out rapidly.
I have tried with filters, but no luck, only filters the sound but the sound does not fade.
In kontakt you can do it with an adsr to cutoff from the filter mod parameters, but SC havent got an adsr to filter modulation parameter. I know the opposite can be made with a big attack.
LOL JUST DID IT:
mod Time(s)--> Amplitude starting about -6db or lower. and replace amplitude with an ordinary LPfilter if you want agressive fading.

thanks for your tips! gave me inspiration in making musik again (REALLY!!)
has anyone of you tried to create custom models of the morph-filter in sc?
I bought sc in order to use it to create emu-style dnb filter madness, but wasnt able to use the morph-filter correctly.

well SC is flexible, but sometimes you have to mess a bit with the parameters to make it work. When you think you can't do an specific effect there is always a way to do it, but a bit different to other samplers.
Indeed SC is very inspiring

Thanks! I actually haven't gotten around the xml format. Once I discover how, I plan on exploring the entire thing about the morph filters.undef wrote:thanks for your tips! gave me inspiration in making musik again (REALLY!!)

I can tell you though - in my upcoming library, I've made extensive use of the morph filters.

Don't quite understand what you're trying to do. You can use AEG (hardwired to amplitude by default) to control filter. Or any of the EGs.Kel wrote:

Hey all; I've been digging around for the manual... was it installed somewhere, and I'm not finding it?
Or is it somewhere for download? Link?
Thanks so much!

can you believe I didnt know that AEG was wired to amplitude... lolkeyman_sam wrote: Don't quite understand what you're trying to do. You can use AEG (hardwired to amplitude by default) to control filter. Or any of the EGs.
with reference to my question about pitch shifting in another thread, I think I was looking for "per-note-pitchshift", so pitch bends sounded a bit better and less artificial... Im new to samplers, and I really dont know if timestrecht would work with pitch slides of a few semitones.I suppose I will have to conform with ordinary pitch bends. (so may be the best and only real way is using sampled pitch slides).

Sounds like you'd need to touch around with portamento, which does 'pitch-slides' per note relative to the previous note played on that instance.Kel wrote:can you believe I didnt know that AEG was wired to amplitude... lolkeyman_sam wrote: Don't quite understand what you're trying to do. Hi MaliceX, I've been experimenting with "per-note" portamento in SC, what I'm referring to, is that for example take a midi file with pitch bends, If you put SC with a sample in porta or legato it sounds artificial when the pitch changes(slides), I mean the only way for this to sound good is with formant preservation, like kontakt tone/time-machine, or using prerecorded up/down slides for an specific instrument.MaliceX wrote: Sounds like you'd need to touch around with portamento, which does 'pitch-slides' per note relative to the previous note played on that instance.
And, that is not a problem of SC in itself, because I suspect pro libraries like garritan which uses kontakt internally do some type of formant correction in the pitch bends(I tested some midi pitch slides and they DO sound different in garritan/kontakt).
Well probably this pitch thing is something you should not do with a sampler, and using proffesional samples is the way to go.
cheers.
PS: I mean, samples or sf2 of an instrument, whatever it is, Im talking about being expressive with a sampler, not sampler mangling.

Dunno about that. Other than I've heard Sampletank had some kind of stretching mechanism to keep the original tones to base samples, even with multisamples, depending on the range it's still going to be artificial with pitch bends in LARGE ranges. When I tried Realguitar/strat demo, the pitch bend isn't really that noticeable to be artificial, probably because each of its notes were meticulously recorded by per-fret.Kel wrote:Hi MaliceX, I've been experimenting with "per-note" portamento in SC, what I'm referring to, is that for example take a midi file with pitch bends, If you put SC with a sample in porta or legato it sounds artificial when the pitch changes(slides), I mean the only way for this to sound good is with formant preservation, like kontakt tone/time-machine, or using prerecorded up/down slides for an specific instrument.MaliceX wrote: Sounds like you'd need to touch around with portamento, which does 'pitch-slides' per note relative to the previous note played on that instance.

In other words, other than Sampletank to my knowledge, I don't think there exists a sampler that can do what you're saying for pitch bending.

The sample library has been released. This thread's going up for those interested in SC!!
