Hello fellow KVR addicts,

I am currently sampling my jazz drumset because I couldn't find any sampled kit to produce realistic (enough)jazz swing patterns. I am very pleased with the results so far and am thinking about releasing the set "commercially".

The hits are sampled at multiple velocities and use "round robin" in battery (2) to avoid "machigunning". Special care is taken in sampling the rides from a "jazz sound" perspective and I assure you they sound very nice (demo's up n a near future).

The kit will be recorded "very dry/ in your face". This is because it will have to blend or "sit in the mix" with generally very dry recorded double bass or bass guitar.

The price range would be between 15$ and 30$.

So the question is: is there any interest in "yet another" sampling library (of this kind)?

Toontrack is planning to release a new jazzy EzDrummer expansion. They say it's going to be something big, and they use to make things really well, so hurry up with your library! It looks like there's a lot of people interested in jazzy sounds, so there's market out there, but I insist, the Jazz EZx is on the way!

Thanks for the info. I use EZdrummer myself and am one of the people insisting on the forums over there that they would release such a set.

I will keep an eye on Toontrack. My set is propably ready for release within tw weeks, during the upcoming little holyday in fact.

I am interested, too. There aren't many multisampled libraries out there that have Jazz Drum focus. I can think of two currently available: Peter Erskine library and NsKit7. Then there is the "soon-to-be-released" Jazz EZX (Tootrack). There lots of room for Jazz drum samples! Carry on!

Currently there is lots of room for a good jazz kit. Even once the EZ one comes out. And someone needs to tell ... um... was it Markleford who's always looking for jazz drums? I can't recall.

What kind of kit is it? Drum sizes, cymbals...etc.

Any clips of you playing the actual drums (if you don't have the sampled kit ready)

Hi Hugo,

BFD have also Jazz sets.

1/ Point 1 is that you need ezdrummer or BFD prior tu use the add-ons.

2/ NsKit7 is no more available atm (though it could be again if I read well. If anyone has news for this)

3/ A Jazz kit available in more than one format : ie Battery III, or HALion program, or K3 could be interesting, or even Guru, LMV etc.

4/ .Wav samples are also a solution though people have to do their own programs and there are already some very good available (drumwerks)

5/ What's in a jazz set anyway ? Brushes, mallets, 18" BD, thin vintage Slingerland snare, with snare ? snareless hits ....

So there's maybe some room for jazz oriented drums. Depends on the available formats, the price (Bfd or EZ drummer + libs are somewhat expensive) and the quality.

To give you some ideas Nskit7 (3 dvd) sold around 400 copies if I remember well and was very affordable. And an acclaimed acoustic set.

Hey, you may just have something here.

It's a "Drum Collective" kit. Maple shells, no wraps, see through finish and small dimensions. In fact a typical bop kit, high pitched and resonant.

Cymbals are Sabian, Istambul and Stagg (yes Stagg, I cannot stand their guitars, but this ride rocks).

No clips for the moment, but I have already programmed a kit in battery and am testing it in Sonar. I am not completely saisfied wth the toms yet and have to re- sample them. Also a bit work in the balancing of the kit pieces to make them sound "even" across velocities->pads. It mixes very well with the Trilogy upright.

I will post examples in the very near future. The kit and examples will be ready the first week of February.

I can already say that until now I used DFHS C&V, Ezdrums and nskit_7 and was never completely satisfied. I am shure that this kit will be a lot more "appropriate" for swing jazz then any of them.

Sounds good too me. If I could load that in battery2, I'd definitely consider at $15.

I have nskit myself (I am one of the 400 buyers,hah) and was/ am not completely satisfied with it, especially the snare is too "roomy" to my taste.

The price (as stated above) would be between 15 and 30 usd. If I recall well nskit was about 70 eur.

I am concentrating on "sticks" only (for the moment) and indeed the BD is 18", the drumset is a "real" bop kit.

Programming is the easyest in battery (2) for me. I will make a soundfont version too, but then there will be no "round robin".

I do own Halion 3, but did not delve very deep into it so that format will have to wait a bit longer.

Anyway if one furshases the Battery version for instance, the raw samples are there, so one can use them in another sampler as well.

I have been paying them a visit and had too delve in the forums to find some info.

And yes a jazz EZx is on the way. I listened to the mp3 demo and it sounds very good although the demo is very busy (but jazz) and the rides don't stand out well, so hard to judge...

Also I got the impression the sound is quite "big" which is not always what one wants.

Curious if I can be the first, haha. Better...I don't know, propably not, different, yes...

And for this price a good "different" Jazz kit should be appreciated I think (Though people tend to appreciate things from an interesting NumberOfMo/$$ ratio point of view nowadays ....

)

Also, based on the same samples, maybe different versions of the kits could be a real plus. Like a pure real jazzette kit version(only floor and 12" tom) 3 toms modern set aso, as well as different tunings for toms (very important for the general feel of a kit).

But well a good sounding jazz kit with an affordable price is a good thing.

I have Halion 3.1 and last Battery 3 so I don't really need a Hal version for it. Halion is very handy for real BIG kits (Ie w 1 Go ride cymbals) and also for real modular kits ( as the snare of this kit then the ride of this one aso).

For integrated kits Battery is more simple and efficient.

Well good luck for this project. I'd really like to hear some demos.

For the price, I'd definitely got for it. So long as the wavs are available. If it's not too big, SFZ format would be nice. Even if it is too big, a textual description of the mapping would be useful for doing my own
