I need something to do the same thing as Kontakt (even more basic is cool) that is a vsti where I can load instruments (that I create using my .wav files) to be played through via midi notes. Any ideas?

Isn't Shortcircuit, which was recently made freeware, essentially the same thing as Kontakt?

*.wav files? Try Osiris XT.

EDIT: Wait, Shortcircuit looks way cooler.

Get Shortcitcuit 1 here :

Its the best freeware sampler around. It used to cost 125USD or somethinga round that.

AFAIK the only thing I found SC can't do is correct pitch shift (with formant conservation). In kontakt you can do this with tone/time machine... (Even with time machine in kontakt doesn't make a lot of difference with plain pitch slides though).
But overall, SC is very good, try it you wont regret, and have a look in production techniques forum for SC tips.

Thanks so much guys! I'll go check these out right now!

You can do a pitch shift in SC if you have a drum loop. You can't pitch shift individual notes tho.

To see how to pitch shift a drum loop in SC, check out my Shortcircuit techniques thread. Its quite simple and offers a granular time stretching method which is user-controllable (better than Kontakt's).

This link is the search for all free VST samplers on Windows in the KVR databank. I'm sure you can find something in there. :)
