I usually trigger my drums from a keyboard, or I just copy, cut and paste with the mouse.

I see some people is obsessed with AKAI MPCs or MPDs (specially in Hip-Hop) , or drumpads, over triggering from a keyboard or just copy and paste.

Ive seen a couple of friends using MPCs and I personally think it's slower, and clumsier than using software, but maybe they just didn't know how to use the hardware. I think it's slower; specially for cutting sounds, I just can't see my self using that wheel. When I cut I use wavelab with keyboard short cuts and I can say it's way faster.

The only thing I hate about the keyboard is when my drums are mapped to black keys in kontakt. I feel those sounds are more difficult to play, but its just a click to change that.

I would like to know what your opinion is guys. Is is such a big change to change from a plain keyboard to a drumpad? Why is there such a big fan community for MPCs?

The only advantage in pads is in playability compared to keys. It's simply better, especially for complex beats. Of course the quality of the pads is important. As for software vs hardware editing, that has nothing to do with keyboard vs pads.

MPC's are good for knocking out beats without the aid of a computer and 'quiet', and good fun rigged up to four speakers.

I think the accuracy is host specific re ppq. - The MPC I got is stuck at 96 while I can get upto 768 or 960 in different hosts, as far as composition goes re internal rendering, of course the mpc can be used as a trigger to fire off the vstis in the software. I think Fine detail is better in software.

I also 'prefer' the keyboard for triggering sounds, I think this is because keyboards where one of my first instruments - not computers or pads.

as they have a special keyboard mapping system, ('imap', I think)
from, with, or used by IK Multimedia, and others in various percussion products, and the awesome new Ocean Way drum sound module/system. They mentioned a limited bank of the same to tease mere mortals, not sure if it's out. I think I read that Squids, moderator at that forum, is a master keyboard percussionist. Good luck

I like keyboards for simple beats, Pad Kontrol for more complex.

I recently picked up a DTExpress EKit for cheap and I have to say I like that the most.

yes, especially since I picked my kit up for a few dollars more than a new Pad Kontrol
