Or, you could always go by what you'd reasonably need in a mix and use MDA Piano

my main piano is still either mda (when on xp) or the logic built in piano, which is fairly small and sounds good in a mix to my hears)
and NO, they don't even provide the hard drive, funny installation swapping (assuming 8 GB dual layer DVD's) about 35 DVD's jsut to copy the sounds (cause BD is not an option yet, and even then that would be 5-6 BD disk, still a LOT lol)

I wouldn't buy a Steinway. They use a dongle.

270GB seems pretty over the top to me. I understand that some people are amazing pianists with golden ears who can really appreciate the difference, but not me. I use Native Instruments Akoustik Piano, mainly because it came along "for free" with Komplete. Seems good enough to me. I've also been working off and on to build my own sample set from my parents Steinway B grand, but honestly, if I were going for realism, I'd just record myself playing it live.

so we are basically getting back to where we need a rack of hardware, only instead of effects it will be hard drives!
I can't wait until around the year 2013 or so when we can buy a "virtual hard drive rack" plugin containing all the Classic Retro Sample Libraries. The Platinum Edition will come with its own satellite for beaming the samples anywhere you are working providing , of course, that you have the antenna dongle with you.

these products aren't meant for the average producer - film composers and classical folks are the ones it's marketed to. we can sit here and call it ridiculous all we want but at the end of the day it's not intended for us.

what I meant is that it is a humongous waste of anyone time to copy those data if company is not bright enough to provide you a usb drive (which cost peanuts those days, and you get the bonus of a new drive)
and it's intended for anyone, i doubt a real film producer will use a sampled piano when there is a grand in the studio)

yeah but with sequencing you get a lot more options. so if someone can pull off a great sampled piano then there is a market for it in that crowd. i agree it should definitely come with a harddrive but i also see those are getting cheaper now that we have the 1TB drives widely available now.

i tought the yamaha midi grand was the way to go for great piano song AND sequencing power(i mean they used THAT to restore glen gould masterpieces last year)

...Ah, but what sample set other than one taking up 270GB is going to have 14 velocity layers of the pianist scooting on the piano bench? Think of the realism!
