in that price range, maybe a cheap fender, but bass amps are pretty expensive as it needs LOTS of power to accurately render low frequency, and really strong drivers

Yeah, you need at least 150watts if you want to use it for anything else than home practice

Well I'm not that good, and a guy at the music store I learn at said that 120 watts is fine.. I'm actually thinking about saving up for a 60 watt..

Mainly for home practice I presume? Anything over 100W is then waisted.

Peavy has some models, so does Ashdown. Crate should also be mentionned. A friend of mine had a very small Crate model that I was impressed with.

You should visit a real music shop nearby, and look what they have in stock. Maybe they have a nice demo'ed model or a second-hand unit for next to nothing. Demo some (with your own bass if possible) and pick your favourite. At the end it always comes down to personal taste.

get something used....if you are going to use it to play in a band at least 100W or you will burn it for sure.
Good or not is more a matter of taste (and price of course).
Anyway as a beginner anything is good, get one you like and you can afford.
When you go to the shop to try it use a bass that is in the same range as the one you have.

Used. If you live near a major city, try craigslist.com.

Thanks for all the replies!

One thing to start is the music store is an instrument rental store/guitar shop.. one side of the store is just guitar and guitar repair..

I was looking at Hartke and Tech 21 amps.. I liked the hartke because they sounded good and the price wasn't that bad..

Hartke is to be recommended indeed! I thought that would be quite above your budget, but if you can get one, and it sounds good, and the price is right: go for it!

It also depends a bit on what kinda music style you're playing i guess and how loud the drummer plays. With just 60watts the drums will blow your sound away, no one will be able to hear you

I can get one used, and with a discount(I know someone at this music store)..

Barf,

I was told that 60 should be OK if your competing with drummers, but I guess it's your music style..

Wattage is relevant to many other factors as to how much spl the amp/speaker will put out. Here we have a 15w RMS Ampeg B-15-N that will get very, very loud, not to mention sound incredible, it's circa 1962. I've heard it blow away rigs rated at 4x that power.

Hartke gear is top quality, if you can get one in your price range that suites your needs, by all means do.

Whatever you buy, try it in a real playing situation before buying, so you know for certain it will suffice your needs.

ampeg BA115 all the way. I love love love mine. great ampeg tone at an affordable price. they retail at 350, so that means you could easily find one (perhaps used) around your price range on ebay.
