I'm in the mood to completely mangle my sounds. I'm looking for something like the Kaoss Pad that will let me decimate, loop, and otherwise mangle my sounds in a software environment. I found something called Andromeda but it doesn't seem to be compatible with my environment.

Other things that I'm looking for a great real-time controls. I want to manipulate a live sound and record the results. I want to be able to "play with it" rather than programming. Maybe I should be looking for a DJ program to use outside of my sequencer?

I'm wide open to suggestions. Features and usability are more of a concern than price.

I just checked out Tracktor and Deckadance's websites. Are either of these going to be what I'm looking for?

Edit: Let me clarify that I don't care about crossfading tracks or anything like that. All I care about it glitching and decimating my tracks in a live environment.

Okay, this is the last time I reply to myself, I promise :D

I'm looking at Ableton Live right now and it looks to be pretty close to what I'm looking for. Am I right?

Try the Metasurface in AudioMulch.
The colourful palette in this pic:

You can record/capture your gestures as envelopes in the sequencer, or audio.
Somewhere I have a list of VST plugins that work well with it,
and I'll post it if I find it.
Still, AudioMulch has some great built in effects.

Live is great for sound mangling ...
you also might like Asteroid for some Kaos Pad type action.

Ah, Asteroid is the name of the program that I tried. Not Andromeda. Yeah, I couldn't get it to do anything in my sequencer at all. It was disappointing too because I love the Kaoss Pad and would love to have a software equivalent. I'm playing with the Ableton demo right now and it looks promising. The workflow is vastly different from anything I'm used to. I'll take a look at Audiomulch as well. Thanks for the replies so far.

howdy divaster!

all these for various stutter, reverse, etc dj fx
memory
phutboy slim
mincer
disorder
daft funk...though the Klanglabs' site appears to be offline currently...

Here's a relatively new one and I dig it a bunch 8) :
UTFX from AZ Audio
UTFX has a nice decimation section :D

if ya need to get even deeper into realtime fx application:
Artillery2
(a wee bit pricey :scared:.., but very powerful...they are running a Christmas special still...)

a year ago, I would have heartily recommended Lucifer II, but for the time being, that one is currently not available. There are hopes that will change in the not too distant future.
INCREDIBLY powerful tool for beat mangling, fx application, etc.

all these I've suggested are moreless midi driven fx (ie- they have to have a midi signal run to them in order to take full advantage of their being able to change settings in realtime.)

While only UTFX is the only one of these I can think of that has a bitcrush/decimation option, I'm sure I've not thought of all the realtime tools...
there are DOZENS of nice bitcrushers that could be used on an fx send that you could bring up in realtime (dj style...):
elite reducer, lofi, Sonalksis TBK2(pricey...), and jeroen breebaart's time machine(but that site appears to be down as well :? )

and of course (as thecontrolcentre mentions), Ableton Live is killlla for realtime manglation ;)... and yes- the workflow ain't like Cubase, Sonar or any of the others. However, once you get to a certain point... it becomes completely transparent, ya don't have to even think about things anymore and you can nail stuff down as quick as you can think of it. I've never been able to say that about any other DAW.

Asteriod is a little tricky in that it needs midi input as well:
once you put it in the audio path, you need to run midi to the plug. Once you do that, you will find that cc1 (your mod wheel on your keyboard controller, in most cases) will control the wet/dry mix level of the effect.
c1 (midi note) turns on FX1, c#1 =FX2, d1=FX3,d#1=FX4, and e1=FX5 etc.
all other midi notes act as a gate for the effect... also, when you trigger the effect, you can scoot the "donut" around the "kaos" pad for effect...
so you are really working the mod wheel, gating various midi notes and working the pad before you begin to see the real results and power from Asteroid (which IS an excellent tool that I neglected to mention... thanks, thecontrolcentre!)
hopefully, once Dennis sets up some docs for Asteroid more folks will start to pick it up ;) for now, maybe this vid from the Prodyon site will help ya some.

allofdrab is certainly right about audiomulch. While I havent' worked with it in years, even back then it was the bomb. It can only be better now :tu:

Wow, I have quite a bit to chew through tomorrow. Thanks for all of the feedback, guys. I'll post back tomorrow once I've had some time to experiment.

Hey what about Audiodamage Dr.Device!
"For some reason everyone on this site hates Roger Nichols, loves Zebra, doesn't need a Virus (unless it's TI), uses Reaper, and thinks the Kaoss pad is cool: remember these rules and you'll be popular." (blackboyrockinit)

Post

The realtime control with Dr. Device is huge. The XYZ pad is great. Recording is great. Filter, delay, saturation, bit reduction.
