A decent portable digital recorder?

Hello.

I've mentioned before about doing this ambient/dub project with a mate of mine... We're both getting into recording random sounds to further mangle them up and that (ala The Foley Room by Amon Tobin)... I'm after getting a decent portable recorder (that's digital) with a good mic that will let me record all sorts of stuff... Mostly stuff outside, things like that.

Could anyone recommend one? Or has anyone done this kind of thing before?

Zoom H2 http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/

Costs 132 quid at Thomann http://www.thomann.de/gb/zoom_h2.htm

I have one with an 8 gig SD chip = approx 11 and a half hours recording time @ stereo 16 bit 44.1 khz wav files.

Absurd amounts of recording time when recording hi quality 320 kbs stereo MP3s.

I was using it last week in Japan to records crowds, waterfalls, bird sounds, subway ambiences etc. Very happy with the results.

Has 4 built in mics... - so you can do 4 channel surround as well as 90 degree and 120 degree stereo

Do make sure to see the Zoom H2 SD chip compatibility list before buying an SD card.

Best wishes,

Hmmm... The Zoom H2 looks very good and could be just what I want...

Say I wanted a microphone to go with it... One where I can pick up really accurate direct stuff (like speech or anything that's more 'direct', like insects running around or things like that), so I have a complete sound recording package... Do you recommend any particular microphone that would go well with the Zoom H2? I have a Shure SM58 but I'd rather keep this in the studio and would rather not take that out and about.

The Zoom already has pretty decent mics inside (four of them, apparently!)

Otherwise I bought an AIWA stereo mic a while ago, which is awesome:

It's small, light and relatively sturdy (I've had it for years).

Really sensitive though, so you have to put it somewhere and not handle it while recording.

Another vote here for the Zoom - been indispensable for me when I've been on the move .

Hmm... Looks like the Zoom H2 is the one to get I reckon. Perfect for my mission to record as many different sounds as possible!

For someone who would want the cheapest decent one. (It's around $120 in the eBay stores, its MSRP $230).

another happy H2 user here...i haven't tried it with my Rode condenser mic (forgot the model number, takes phantom a 9v batt ), but the onboard mics sound pretty good to me...

Can you recommend any budget portable digital recorders (cheaper than the Zoom H2) that are mac compatible? Or does it not make a difference with Mac or PC?

I've just started out (be gentle :) and need advice.

Thanks.

Cheaper, no, but the H4 blows the H2 away, and for what you have described will be perfect for what you want. The x-y pair of included onboard mics are stunning. In addition if you want a surround type recording, there are 2 onboard mic pres with phantom power, and you can record all 4 tracks discretely.

USB compatibility with Mac and PC (Leopard compatible). The quality of the H4 totally dwarfs the H2. If you want to capture quality hi resolution field samples, this is the unit to buy.

My Edirol R1 is ages better than Zoom H4. I've compared both. Better sound, less noise. Really excellent mics. It's big, but I don't mind that if I want quality. I got lucky and got one even cheaper than an R09. And I'd say R09 is also better than H4. If you can find an R1 cheap, get it.

Interesting, as I auditioned both Edirol devices and found them to be very much the inferior of the H4. Their backround noise rejection was horrible, the handling noise completely unacceptable, and the audio AD resolution was very poor. I did many side by side recordings with several of these, and the Edirol was one of the first to be booted.

You're right about the handling noise. It's much, much worse than H4. If you need to carry it in unoptimal conditions, it won't do. Other than that, my experience with recording quality was different. Overall, the stereo image sounded better to me, the noise much more acceptable and not annoying, and the frequency response more balanced. (R1) I didn't/don't want to reject any background noise. The R1 is great at capturing everything very accurately and detailed. I don't know what you mean about AD resolution. For enclosed spaces it often wouldn't be desirable of course, but if I wanted to record somewhere closed and focus on a specific sound source, I'd connect a mic suitable for that.

Cheers guys. This really helps.
