I'm about to buy an external HD, which is high time as I've taken to delete unused sounds to make space. What specs should I look out for to run these flawlessly with my DAW on the main HD?

I'm using a generic 5400RPM laptop drive in a CompUSA (ie one small step above generic) external USB2 case. Probably not the ideal, but it's also laptop-powered and doesn't need a separate wall-wart like faster 3.5" drives do.
For interface, you want either USB2, FireWire or SATA.
As far as drive speed, ST2 does not stream, so the drive speed hit is on loading/changing projects, rebuilding the database, or browsing/changing samples. It should not affect playback of an already-loaded project. A drive as described above may be satisfactory.
If you also use streaming samplers (I have ST2 & DimPro that don't and Kontakt and Wusik that do) and will share the drive for that as well, you may want a faster drive - 7200RPM for example.

Just an additional question on this not actually related to the original question - but more to the answer given.
If you have disk-streaming sample players can external drives be realistically used for the content? I would have thought it would not be advisable even with a 7200RPM external drive. Would USB2 be sufficient in this case?
I don't know the answer - just genuinely interested in info on this.

Caleb

Same here, I've always used external hard drives for sample libraries, streaming or not. Never had any playback problems or recording glitches.
